Virgin complains to EC over BT state broadband aid

Virgin Media has written to the EC to 'strongly oppose' an extension of future state aid for broadband investment, reports the Financial Times. Virgin is highly critical of the UK Government's GBP 1.6 billion national broadband programme for giving BT 'hundreds of millions of pounds of excess returns'. It has also submitted a response to a UK parliamentary inquiry arguing for the abolition of state subsidies for superfast broadband. Virgin wants the government to stop providing subsidies for superfast network roll-out in the last 5-10 percent of the UK, insisting that commercial alternatives
