Western Europe's mobile phone market contracted by 4.2 percent to 43.6 million units shipped in the first quarter, compared to the year-earlier period, according to IDC. The decline was driven by a slowdown in smartphone growth, with shipments up 12 percent to 31.6 million, the lowest growth rate for smartphones since 2004. Feature phone shipments came down by 31 percent to 12 million units. IDC attributes the slowdown to the region's economic situation, which has seen many consumers lose disposable income, as well as operators reducing their handset subsidies to counter lower revenues.
