Yara and Kongsberg expect crewless ship to sail fjord by late 2018

Monday 24 July 2017 | 12:24 CET | News
Norwegian fertiliser manufacturer Yara International and Kongsberg Gruppen are taking the lead in developing crewless ships, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal's online edition. The vessel, called the Yara Birkeland, is due to start transporting fertiliser 37 miles down a fjord in late 2018 from a production plant to the port of Larvik, said the WSJ. The electric ship will use the Global Positioning System (GBS), radar, sensors and cameras to navigate around other vessels and to dock by itself.
