Ziggo to launch gigabit speeds in Utrecht from 15 October

Thursday 10 October 2019 | 18:42 CET | News

Ziggo will launch its gigabit offering on 15 October. Initially, residents of Utrecht, Vleuten, De Meern and Nieuwegein will get the speeds, CEO Jeroen Hoenkamp said during the Get Connected annual conference of the Economic Board Utrecht. Hilversum will come next at the end of November, with more cities and regions set to follow in 2020.

Ziggo currently provides actual download cable internet speeds of up to 500 Mbps for consumers and 600 Mbps for business connections, all running via Docsis 3.0. VodafoneZiggo announced in September that it had started conducting tests in an Utrecht neighbourhood using Docsis 3.1, which should allow speeds of up to 10 gigabit.

Ultimately, in the course of 2020, two thirds of VodafoneZiggo customers will be able to purchase internet subscriptions of up to 1 Gbps, Hoenkamp said, adding that the service will cover the cities and regions of Amsterdam, Apeldoorn, Arnhem, Eindhoven, Groningen, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, Tilburg and Wageningen. The CEO of VodafoneZiggo noted that, in contrast to deployment of fibre, there is no need to dig.

Important strategic step

The introduction of Gbps speeds is an important step Ziggo’s strategy to prepare the Netherlands for the digital future with a fixed-mobile "GigaNet" network. This network will make it possible for the growing number of households that want to watch TV, stream video in 4K resolution, or play heavy games online. A successful pilot has already taken place in the Utrecht neighbourhood of Oog in Al. Rollout in city of Utrecht and surroundings will take place almost three months ahead of schedule.

About 97 percent of Ziggo's network is already fibre. To enable download speeds of up to 1 Gbps via the remaining coaxial part of the network, Ziggo has upgraded this part with Docsis 3.1. The technology will eventually make it possible to hit speeds of 10 Gbps.

Technical soft launch in the Utrecht region

A technical soft launch will take place in the city of Utrecht and its surrounding areas. The regular Giga package (Internet up to 1 Gbps down and 50 Mbps up, the most extensive TV package with Movies&Series and fixed calling) will cost private individuals EUR 99.50 per month including VAT. Special introductory rates will be introduced for both new and existing customers.

Business customers will pay EUR 75 per month minus VAT (EUR 90.75 including VAT) for the Giga subscription. The download speed via the cable of the modem will go to a maximum of 940 Mbps down with one device and 1 Gbps with two devices. Gigabit speeds (1Gbps) will also be available via Wi-Fi, with the right equipment.
