Zimbabwean telecom revenue falls 13% to USD 249.88 mln in Q1

Friday 12 July 2019 | 11:13 CET | News

Zimbabwe's telecommunications sector recorded a 13 percent decline in revenue to USD 249.88 million from USD 287.03 million in the fourth quarter of 2018 as costs in the sector increased, eating into income. The Postal Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz)'s 2019 first quarter reveals that costs rose by 6.4 percent to USD 185.9 million from 2018's fourth quarter of USD 174.78 million.

All the mobile operators recorded a decline in revenues, with Econet recording the biggest drop of 15 percent, Potraz said. It said the decline in mobile revenue is down to the fall in voice traffic, which still accounts for 59.3 percent of total mobile operator revenues.

There was also a decline of 4 percent in mobile voice traffic from 1.47 billion in the 2018 fourth quarter to 1.40 billion minutes in Q1. The report said mobile operators recorded an overall decline in capital expenditure in the quarter under review. Capital expenditure fell by 22.1 percent to USD 22.98 billion from USD 29.50 billion.

The report says internet/data usage rose by 19.2 percent to 10.20 TB in the quarter under review from 8.56 TB in Q4.
