Dutch broadband market worth EUR 459 million in Q4 2012, lines grow to 6.59 million

Houten, The Netherlands, 12 March 2013 - The Dutch broadband market grew by 0.8 percent or 52,800 net additions during the fourth quarter of 2012, to reach 6.59 million connections on 31 December. A 0.4 percent quarterly decrease in DSL connections to 3.16 million was offset by 1.0 percent growth in cable broadband connections during the quarter, to 2.96 million. The number of FTTH/B connections also grew by more than 8 percent during Q4, giving the technology a 7.3 percent share of the market.

For the first time, Telecompaper also estimated the retail revenues for the consumer broadband market; these amounted to EUR 459 million in the fourth quarter of 2012. Retail revenue estimates will also be included in the upcoming reports on the TV market and fixed telephony market.

KPN, including its XS4ALL and Telfort brands, was still the largest broadband provider in the Netherlands with a 40.9 percent share of subscribers at the end of December 2012, adding 2 percentage points during the fourth quarter, mainly due to the acquisition of FTTH service providers Concepts ICT, Edutel, KickXL and XMS. Excluding the acquisition, KPN’s market share would have grown by 0.2 percentage points during the quarter. Ziggo was number two with a market share of 26.6 percent, and UPC came third with 15.6 percent of broadband subscribers.

“During 2013, the broadband connections is expected to grow 2.6 percent, with cable and fibre offsetting the continued decrease in DSL,” according to Telecompaper Senior Research Analyst Kamiel Albrecht. “Annual growth is slowing, as over 87 percent of households now have broadband, leaving less room for growth.”
