Press Release

Gaming apps more popular among women and teenagers

Houten, The Netherlands, 08 July 2016 - Over half of Dutch consumers with smartphones have a gaming application installed on their device (55%). Gaming apps are especially popular among women, and teenagers are also more likely to have gaming apps installed. Nearly three-quarters (72%) of teens have gaming apps on their smartphones, compared to less than half (44%) of the elderly in the Netherlands. However, Wordfeud, Farm Heroes Saga and Bubble Witch 2 are exceptions and are on the smartphones of more elderly people than teenagers, according to the latest Dutch Apps Market report from Telecompaper.

The Dutch Apps Market report, based on a survey in June 2016, shows that Candy Crush, Wordfeud and Candy Crush Soda are the most popular gaming apps in the Netherlands. Of the 26 games mentioned in the survey, these three are installed on the most smartphones. While these three games have consistently ranked at the top, the latest report shows some changes in the usage of gaming apps.

For example, Farm Heroes Saga, installed on 8 percent of Dutch smartphones and fifth in the rankings, is used on average more days a month (15), but the number of minutes users play the game declined by an average 26, from 66 minutes a week in December 2015 to 40 minutes a week in June 2016. Also, while Candy Crush is the most installed gaming application, other games such as Wordfeud, Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Soda are used more often. Wordfeud is the most used gaming app, at an average 66 minutes a week.

The report also found that over a third of Dutch smartphone owners have an application for public transport information on their device (36%). This type of app has shown an increase in penetration of 6 percentage points in the past year. Public transport apps – such as ‘NS Reisplanner Xtra’, ‘9292’ and ‘ANWB onderweg’ – are more popular among women; 40 percent of women have such an app on their smartphone, compared to 36 percent of Dutch men. Both groups showed an increase of six percentage points in the past year.

Public transport apps are also more popular among younger people, aged 12-29. However, despite the higher penetration of these apps, consumers are using them somewhat less often. In June, the average use of public transport apps was eight days a month.
