One of mobile payment technologies for consumers using mobile phones for all kinds of payment transactions is based on Near Field Communications (NFC). NFC is a short-range, wireless connectivity technology that allows consumers to perform contactless transactions, access digital content, and connect electronic devices with a single touch. A Dutch trial of mobile payments using NFC technology in supermarkets has proven a success. Other trials are launched as well to get more insight into consumer acceptance of the payment method before deciding on a widespread roll-out of the service. Greater availability of mobile payment methods with secure and easy-to-use applications, backed by banks and mobile operators, will create an alternative to cash and other payment transactions.
