GSMA says mobile sector effect on GDP rises 14% in 2025
The effect of the mobile industry on the EU's GDP increased by 14 percent in 2025 to EUR 1.15 trillion, according to 'The Mobile Economy Europe 2026' report from the GSMA. The report finds that Europe's mobile sector now directly accounts for 6.1 percent, up from 5.5 percent or a EUR 1.01 trillion contribution in 2024. It said that EUR 820 billion came from productivity, as using mobile phones and mobile internet apps made obtaining information more efficient, and accelerated processes and communications.

Dutch tax authority moves IT in-house for digital autonomy
The Dutch tax authority (Belastingdienst) is pursuing a strategy aimed at digital autonomy, according to a letter sent to parliament by State Secretary Eerenberg of the Ministry of Finance. The authority is following four tracks: expanding in-house IT development and management, increasing capacity in its own data centres, applying open-source software more widely, and intervening where necessary in ongoing IT projects.

New Swedish legislation aims to cut telephone and SMS fraud
Swedish telecoms regulator PTS said new rules will take force on 01 August to prevent telephone and text message fraud, following their passage in parliament (Riksdag) on 11 June. Among other things, the legislation obliges operators to stop calls and SMS that appear to be trying to defraud or mislead a large group of recipients. The assessment will not be based on the content of the call or text but on unusual traffic patterns and other technical indicators.

The average cost of a new broadband contract is currently GBP 22.63, down 10 percent from an average monthly cost of GBP 25.19 in 2016.
