AT&T introduces new IoT management platform

AT&T unveiled at CES a new platform for managing business IoT services. AT&T IoT Network Intelligence is expected to help drive operational efficiency and streamlined IoT device management. The initial offering, IoT Network Intelligence Standard, equips enterprises with a set of 4G and 5G network performance KPIs and insights for devices connected to the AT&T mobile network. The dashboard helps customers quickly access detailed performance data to drive businesses decisions and optimise operations.

French operators step up pace of 5G activations in December

The footprint of 5G cell sites emitting a signal across mainland France increased by 757 during December, reaching 45,955 as of 01 January, according to spectrum agency ANFR. This monthly increase was up from 445 in November and 701 in the year-earlier period. All four network operators accelerated the pace of 5G site activations, led by Orange with 521 additional sites across the 700 MHz, 2.1 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands.

Italian retail sales rise again in November, e-commerce up 4.6%

Italy's retail sales climbed 0.5 percent in value and 0.6 percent in volume in November, following the previous month's similar rise, according to the latest preliminary data from national statistics office Istat. Cosmetic and toilet articles (+5.9%) increased the highest in November, while the steepest decline was seen in other goods (-0.4%).

Snom inks partnership with RingQ to offer business telephony services

Snom has inked a strategic partnership with Cloud CX communications platform RingQ to provide end-to-end telephony services for businesses. The companies say the partnership will enable firms of any size to use Snom IP phones in combination with RingQ's cloud communications platform. As a first step in their collaboration, they are introducing a service to support Snom's desk phone models, and other phone models will be added eventually.

RamNode cuts Netherlands operating costs 70% with move to OpenMetal

OpenMetal announced that cloud provider RamNode has modernized its Netherlands data centre operations using OpenMetal's enterprise bare metal platform. The migration to the new infrastructure resulted in around 70 percent lower costs and a 16-fold increase in virtual machine density. RamNode is now considering a similar deployment in other locations, including Singapore, the supplier said.

Citymesh tests connected drones with Ardennes fire service

Belgian operator Citymesh announced a new partnership with the fire service in the Flemish Ardennes region to deploy connected drones to support their work. The trial will see drones placed at four locations - Oudenaarde, Ronse, Zottegem and Kruisem - so they can be deployed in minutes if needed to assist during a call-out for the fire service. They can send live images to the dispatch centre and first-line intervention teams, helping them prepare en route to the fire.

Africell Sierra Leone has launched a SIM-based online child protection service called Kidzonet to enable parents and guardians to manage and track their child's social media and online content consumption. Kidzonet operates directly at SIM level, letting parents activate and manage content controls. It filters and blocks content considered inappropriate for minors but leaves standard voice calls and SMS unaffected.

Cellnex prices new bond series amounting to EUR 1.5 bln

Spanish infrastructure operator Cellnex Telecom said it has completed the pricing of two series of euro-denominated bonds amounting to EUR 1.5 billion aimed at qualifying investors. In a statement to financial markets regulator CNMV, Cellnex said the first EUR 750 million series matures on 19 January 2031, has a 3.000 percent coupon payable annually and will be issued at a price of 98.494 percent of its nominal value.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have drawn up a framework to address consumer complaints about unsuccessful airtime and data transactions during network downtimes, system glitches or human input errors. Implementation is expected to commence on 01 March. This follows months of discussions involving the NCC, CBN, mobile network operators (MNOs), value added service (VAS) providers, deposit money banks (DMBs) and other relevant stakeholders.

O2 UK announced it has switched on standalone 5G services in the Sheffield area, delivering faster speeds and lower latency across the city. Roughly 580,000 residents across the city of Sheffield and in surrounding areas including Chapeltown, Mexborough, Wombwell, Swinton, Dinnington, and Wickersley can benefit from the upgraded network.

Big tech companies will not face any new regulations in the EU under the proposed Digital Networks Act, people with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Despite a push from telecom operators to force large internet groups to contribute to the costs of networks and face the same rules as other communication service providers, the EU is not expected to add to the digital regulation already imposed on big tech in recent years when it unveils the draft DNA later this month, the report said.

Swiss operator Sunrise plans to cut 190 jobs, including leadership positions, as it moves to streamline the business structure. Employees in shops and in customer-service are largely spared, while apprentices are not affected at all by the cut. Redundancies are expected to take place in February and March, after completed a consultation process with employee representatives and the trade union syndicom.

Cloudflare handed USD 14 mln anti-piracy fine in Italy

Italian communications watchdog Agcom has fined web infrastructure company Cloudflare a total of USD 14 million for breaching online copyright protection regulations in what is the first major fine handed down following the entry into force of 2023 legislation on the protection of copyrighted content. In the decision, Cloudflare was accused of "failing to take any measures to combat the use of its services for the dissemination of illegal content."

Cerillion said it has secured a GBP 42.5 million new contract from Omantel to supply and install its BSS/OSS suite. It will provide ongoing support and maintenance, as well as hosting and managed services over the five-year subscription term, following an initial implementation period. This agreement is Cerillion's largest contract win to date and helps to underpin existing market forecasts for FY 2026 and beyond.

Spectral Capital Corporation said it signed a binding term sheet to acquire Italy-based telecommunications and technology company Intermatica S.p.A. for an undisclosed sum.
