Airtel deploys 3,400 new 5G sites in Maharashtra and Goa

Airtel reports it has deployed more than 3,400 new 5G sites across the Maharashtra & Goa states of India over the past 12 months. The operator's network expansion across 36 districts brings coverage to 22 million customers in cities, towns and remote rural villages. For customers in Maharashtra and Goa, Airtel offers an INR 399 prepay pack for smartphone users.

Banglalink to launch Starlink's direct-to-device satellite connectivity service in Bangladesh

Veon's Bangladeshi subsidiary Banglalink has signed a partnership deal with Starlink Mobile. Under the terms of the deal, Starlink's direct-to-device satellite connectivity in remote areas will be integrated with Banglalink's terrestrial coverage in Bangladesh. Banglalink plans to launch messaging this year, and will then introduce data services as the next phase, pending regulatory approvals.

Brazilian telecom company Oi is preparing to sell its IT and connectivity division, Oi Solucoes, for an estimated BRL 1.4 billion, according to daily O Estado de Sao Paulo. This move is part of the company's ongoing efforts to pay down debt following its judicial reorganisation. Major telecom companies like Vivo, Claro, and TIM, as well as regional providers, are expected to bid for Oi Solucoes, with some already expressing interest. Russian router sales up 10% in Q1

Sales of routers in Russia reached 2.4 million units in the first quarter of this year, according to data from the mobile and electronics retail chain M.Video. The unit sales grew by 10 percent year-on-year, but revenues fell to RUB 7.6 billion from RUB 7.8 billion. TP-Link, Keenetic and Huawei lead among brands.

Polish tech industry group calls for greater flexibility in 5G private network rules

Polish ICT industry group Cyfrowa Polska has warned the draft plan for awarding the 3,800-4,200 MHz band issued by the regulator UKE may hinder the development of private 5G networks in Poland. The industry group supports the general direction of the proposed changes and the alignment of regulations with the EU legal framework. Nevertheless, there are specific areas where the adopted approach is more restrictive than technical analyses conducted by international institutions would suggest is needed.

Georgian operator Silknet updated ts Silk+ range with two new convergent packages. The operator claims that customers can save up to 55 percent when choosing its convergent tariffs, including fixed broadband, TV and mobile services. Package 1 contains broadband at up to 60 Mbps, up to 200 TV channels and a mobile bundle with 200 minutes, 500 MB and 1,000 SMS for two telephone numbers. The monthly rate is GEL 59 in Tbilisi and GEL 45 in other regions. Package 2 comes with unlimited data and SMS on the mobile

Alpac Capital eyes United Group media assets - report

Portuguese investment group Alpac Capital, which owns news channel Euronews, is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire several media outlets from United Group, according to Serbian weekly Vreme. These outlets include TV channels N1 and Nova in Serbia, as well as several daily and weekly publications in the Southeast Europe region. Unnamed sources told Vreme that this deal could be finalised within the next month.

Ukrainian operator Kyivstar, a subsidiary of the Veon Group, said that almost 500,000 customers have accessed its pilot 5G networks since the launch in January. The average daily user base is over 50,000.

GSA survey finds less than quarter of live 5G networks using standalone technology

Less than a quarter of 5G operators have launched standalone 5G networks, underlining the significant room for expansion still in the 5G market, a survey from the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) shows. As of the end of March, there were 95 operators with 5G standalone networks live, up 42 percent from a year earlier, while the total number of 5G networks worldwide rose 14 percent in the same period, to 392.

GCI Holdings agrees to buy Alaskan operator Quintillion

GCI Liberty subsidiary GCI Holdings has announced a definitive agreement to acquire 100 percent of the equity in Q Gateway Intermediate Holdings, which trades as Quintillion, from Grain Management for an enterprise value of USD 310 million. The transaction will combine Quintillion's more than 1,800 miles of existing subsea and terrestrial fibre and approximately 1,500 miles of planned fibre expansion with GCI's state-wide network and operations.

Viasat has been selected by Australian low-cost airline Jetstar Airways to provide in-flight connectivity for long-range international routes. The contract will see Jetstar roll out the Viasat Amara in-flight connectivity (IFC) platform across its fleet of 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Swedish paid streaming subscriptions reach record in Q1 but churn is high

The number of paid streaming subscriptions in Sweden reached a record high of 11 million in the first quarter of 2026, up by 2 million from Q1 2025, according to consultancy Mediavision. Churn is high, though, with over 4 million subscriptions canceled over the past year. New households are subscribing for video streaming and existing households are accumulating more subscriptions, said Fredrik Liljeqvist, principal analyst at Mediavision.

WBD extends coverage of Giro d'Italia cycling races in US, Europe

Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) has signed a long-term extension agreement for the exclusive rights to show the Giro d'Italia and Giro d'Italia Women races to viewers in Europe and the US. The deal also includes top men's and women's Italian road cycling races. The races will be broadcast on HBO Max in the US and Europe, Eurosport in 50 markets across Europe, and on TNT Sports in the UK/Ireland. The long-term deal extends WBD coverage of the Giro d'Italia to more than 30 years.

Italian MVNO Ops! Mobile has launched a dedicated plan with 120GB at the highest possible 5G speeds for under EUR 5 a month. The offer, dubbed Ops Senior Extra, comes with unlimited calls, 50 SMS and the 120GB data bundle at full 5G speeds of up to 2 Gbps (download) and 200 Mbps (upload) for EUR 4.99 a month, with a EUR 9.99 activation fee.

Samsung announced the Galaxy A57 and Galaxy A37 5G smartphones are available in South Africa. The latest Galaxy A series reflects Samsung's commitment to expanding AI (artificial intelligence) capabilities across more devices. The A57 will be offered in the colours navy and gray while the A37 comes in lavender, grey or dark green. Pricing starts at ZAR 11,999 for the Galaxy A57 and ZAR 8,699 for the Galaxy A37.

Bell partners with Celestica to develop sovereign AI infrastructure

Bell Canada has announced a partnership with Celestica, global provider of data centre infrastructure solutions, to advance development of a sovereign Canadian AI capability. They will collaborate to define and develop a sovereign model for AI infrastructure for sensitive data, especially for governments and regulated sectors. The partnership with combine Bell's AI Fabric with Celestica's AI hardware, manufacturing and supply chain capabilities.

Over 85% of Malawi's schools lack internet access

Malawi's ministry of education, science and technology has launched the School Connectivity Landscape Analysis report, revealing that up to 85.8 percent of primary and secondary schools are not connected to the internet, while 46.9 percent of schools have no source of electricity, Xinhua reported. According to the findings, even among the connected institutions, access to digital devices remains "critically limited," with an average of one computer serving 356 students.

Denmark's GomSpace forms UASAT sovereign satellite venture with Ukraine's Stetman

Danish company GomSpace said it has signed an agreement with Ukrainian partner Stetman to establish a joint venture called UASAT to develop capacity for sovereign satellite communication capabilities for dual use. The first satellite is due for launch in autumn 2026 to provide operational feedback for the next steps in the UASAT roadmap. Further information about the initiative will be disclosed as appropriate and in accordance with current operational security considerations.

Rogers adds 40,000 mobile, broadband subscribers in Q1

Rogers Communications has reported total service revenue of CAD 4.9 billion for Q1 2026, up 10 percent, with adjusted EBITDA up 5 percent to CAD 2.4 billion. Total revenue was CAD 5.48 billion in Q1, with wireless accounting for CAD 2.59 billion, cable for VCAD 1.95 billion and the media business for CAD 988 million. Free cash flow was up 32 percent to CAD 0.2 billion in the first quarter.

Deutsche Telekom unit premises searched in bribery investigation

The State Criminal Police in North Rhine-Westphalia searched the premises of Telekom Technik, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom in Bonn, on behalf of the Cologne public prosecutor's office, on suspicion of bribery related to the expansion of the German operator's fibre-optic network. The main suspect is a high-ranking employee of the company. Special units and tax investigators searched a total of 40 private and business premises in North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as bank safe deposit boxes.
