UK rural ISP Airband confirms departure of CEO

UK rural broadband provider Airband confirmed that CEO Kashif Rahman will step down from his role on 28 April. He has been CEO since October 2025. This follows the appointment of a new chairman in March. In a statement, Airband thanked him for his leadership and wished him success for the future. The company provides fixed wireless access (FWA) and fibre broadband services in rural areas.

eX2 signs 20-year dark fibre agreement with Navajo County

US fibre network provider eX2 Technology signed a dark fibre Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) contract with an incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) for dedicated capacity on the middle mile network in Navajo County in northeast Arizona. The 20-year agreement covers the whole 106-mile Navajo County middle-mile network.

Millions of Brits ignoring mobile handset security - Uswitch

New research from Uswitch.com shows that millions of Brits are failing to activate basic security features on their mobile phones, leaving them exposed to identity theft and financial fraud. The warning comes as new data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) shows that 272,000 incidents of mobile phone theft were recorded in the year to March 2025, up around 16 percent year-on-year.

Telus Foundation, Indspire announce new 4-year partnership

Telus has announced a new partnership between the Telus Friendly Future Foundation and Indigenous national charity Indspire. The 4-year, CAD 500,000 partnership, combined with federal match funding, will help provide CAD 1 million in bursaries to Indigenous students - helping to remove post-secondary education barriers for First Nation, Metis and Inuit youth. Eligible students must be enrolled in their first undergrad degree/diploma programme at a recognised post-secondary institution in Canada.

NL-ix opens PoP in Munich

NL-ix is introducing a new PoP in Munich. The Dutch operator said it sees growing demand in south Germany for local, scalable connectivity. The new exchange will be connected to the NL-ix European backbone with capacity up to 400 Gbps and direct connections to Frankfurt and Paris. Peering, IP transit and cloud connectivity are among the services available at the new site.

BT to announce return of BT Mobile brand next week - report

BT is set to revive the BT Mobile brand in summer 2026, supported by multi-million pound advertising campaign, reports The Telegraph newspaper. The BT Mobile brand was dropped in 2023 amid concerns that it was damaged by poor customer service and struggling to attract younger customers, with EE becoming the group's core consumer brand. However, new BT Group CEO Alison Kirkby is looking to revive the brand and refocus BT on its core role as a "national champion".

AOI clinches Texas chip funding to deliver production lines for optical transceivers

Applied Optoelectronics (AOI) said it has secured USD 20.85 million from the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF) to fund additional production lines for making optical transceiver modules. Proceeds from the AOI grant will advance development of a 210,000-square foot manufacturing facility adjacent to AOI's existing Sugar Land headquarters, with Sugar Land situated around 20 miles southwest of central Houston.

Brazilian telecom sector sees 8% rise in foreign investment in March

Brazil's telecommunications sector attracted BRL 2.9 billion (USD 591 million) in foreign investment in March, up from BRL 2.7 billion (USD 547 million) a year earlier. Data from the Central Bank, analysed by the Ministry of Communications, also indicates that total international capital for the first quarter of 2026 reached BRL 8.4 billion.

O2 Slovakia has introduced a promotion to new customers connecting to its postpaid packages on the O2 app, giving them a discount for 12 months. A EUR 4 monthly discount will be applied to the Basic package (standard rate: EUR 22), and the Comfort bundle comes with EUR 5 off the standard price of EUR 33 per month. The biggest discount, EUR 6 is applied when connecting to the Carefree package, priced at EUR 44 per month.

Uzbekistan mobile operator Perfectum Mobile has launched its 5G standalone network in the town of Qibray in the Tashkent region with new base stations in the town. The network is used for providing fixed-wireless services, with broadband at up to 1 Gbps available for customers.

Brazilian Court halts part of 700 MHz mobile auction

A Federal District Court has suspended key aspects of Brazil's upcoming 700 MHz mobile telephony auction, scheduled for 30 April. Federal Judge Edna Ramos's decision restricts the participation of some companies in the priority round, specifically those that were authorised to operate in the 3.5 GHz band from the 2021 5G auction, reported Valor Economico.

MTS reports growth in Russian smartphone insurance market

Russian operator MTS said that the Russian market for mobile device insurance grew by 20 percent in 2025. The market has accelerated to average monthly growth of 25 percent in 2026, and around 15 percent of all mobile devices are now sold with insurance services. Xiaomi smartphones are insured the most (20 percent), followed by Huawei (17 percent), Honor (15 percent), Samsung (14 percent) and Apple (12 percent).

Serbian telecom operators Yettel, A1 Srbija and Telekom Srbija have signed Unicef's Declaration for Action in the Interests of Children's Rights in the Digital Environment. This commitment signifies the operators' pledge to enhance their efforts in ensuring children's online safety. The declaration outlines key areas of focus, including children's online safety, privacy and data protection, digital inclusion, responsible advertising, and monitoring the impact of business operations on children's rights.

Generative and agentic AI projects make up over 11% of Capgemini's bookings in Q1

IT services and consulting group Capgemini said that its first-quarter performance confirmed a "good start" to the year, with bookings up 6.2 percent at constant currency to EUR 6.05 billion (+9.1% in Q4). Generative and agentic AI services accounted for more than 11 percent of first-quarter bookings, compared to 10 percent sequentially and 6 percent in the year-earlier period.

Czech operator Ceske Radiokomunikace (CRA) has acquired the video and audio streaming platform Play.cz. CRA said that with the acquisition of Play.cz, it is strengthening its position in the streaming services market and complementing its portfolio with radio streaming.

Hrvatski Telekom boosts rural broadband with Pro-Ping acquisition

Croatian telecom operator Hrvatski Telekom has signed a deal to acquire 100 percent of Pro-Ping, a regional broadband provider. Pro-Ping, based in Pitomaca and established in 2010, specialises in delivering broadband services, particularly to rural areas, through its optical and wireless networks. As of the end of 2025, Pro-Ping served 17,000 customers and had 17 employees, generating EUR 3.5 million in revenue for that year. The acquisition is pending regulatory approval and is anticipated to be finalised

Unifique launches mobile internet backup for broadband customers

Brazilian regional operator Unifique has introduced a new service called 'Conexao Garantida' (Guaranteed Connection), designed to ensure uninterrupted internet access for its customers. Unifique is offering free and unlimited mobile internet as an automatic backup whenever a customer's fibre connection experiences an interruption. This means that customers with a Unifique combo plan (fibre + mobile internet) can enjoy continuous connectivity, providing greater peace of mind against unforeseen network issues

A1 Belarus has joined the United Nations Global Compact. The operator is a member of the A1 Group, which is affiliated to America Movil. The A1 Group is a member of the UN Global Compact since 2013.

MTS launches 'Smart Business' plan with call analytics

Russian operator MTS introduced the new Smart Business tariff plan to help business customers manage client contacts. The plan includes call analytics, recording and transcription, as well as location-based, call marking and spam protection services. A "mini CRM" service is based on the service MTS Optimus and helps businesses to track and manage contracts.
