Alcatel-Lucent completes US-Ecuador submarine cable system

Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks has announced that the Pacific Caribbean Cable System (PCCS), a 6,000 km undersea cable linking Florida and Ecuador, has entered into commercial service. The system uses multi-channel 100 gigabits-per-second (Gbit/s) technology and has an ultimate design capacity of 80 terabits-per-second (Tbit/s), said Alcatel-Lucent in a statement, adding that it will serve to boost connectivity and substantially increase the availability of broadband services throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America. In addition to Florida and Ecuador, the PCCS system connects the islands of Tortola, Puerto Rico, Aruba and Curacao, as well as Cartagena in Colombia, and Maria Chiquita and Balboa in Panama.

PCCS is owned by a group of telecommunications operators including Cable & Wireless Communications, Setar, Telconet, Telefonica Global Solutions and United Telecommunication Services (UTS).
