AlwaysOn to launch Wi-Fi voice in South Africa

Public Wi-Fi provider AlwaysOn is set to launch a new Wi-Fi voice calling service in South Africa, which will compete against Vodacom South Africa, MTN South Africa, Cell C, and Telkom. AlwaysOn provides secure Wi-Fi Internet through 2,200 hotspots in South Africa and offers roaming capabilities in over 110 countries at more than one million hotspots, BusinessDay reported.

AlwaysOn is repositioning itself as a Wi-Fi-led service provider that has plans to offer its customers more value-added services. According to the report, the company hopes it will expand its subscriber base. Pricing and other details about the service are expected soon, MyBroadband reported.

ASA dismisses Vodacom VoWiFi complaint against Cell C

The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) has dismissed a complaint by Vodacom against Cell C's claim to be the first to have launched Wi-Fi calling in South Africa, MyBroadband said. Vodacom argued that it made the first commercial voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) call in South Africa on 04 June 2015. It said VoWiFi was launched across the Vodacom network, although the service is currently limited to Samsung Galaxy S6 handsets.

Cell C tests Wi-Fi calling service

South Africa operator Cell C is testing a Wi-Fi calling service internally and will launch it commercially in mid-September. According to MyBroadband, the company had targeted the end of July to launch the service, but it said it wanted to include more handsets capable of Wi-Fi calling in its portfolio before going live. The operator said it will provide more details closer to the launch date.

South Africa's Cape Town to offer free Wi-Fi on buses

Cape Town commuters will soon be able to go online for free, Fin24 reported. Pierrinne Leukes, spokesperson for Mayor Patricia de Lille, said the city has issued a tender for a service provider to install and operate a Wi-Fi service on all MyCiTi buses. The minimum allowance per day per passenger will be 50 MB. Having Wi-Fi on the bus, allowing a commuter to be productive, read the news or contact friends while travelling, is expected to make public transport more attractive.

Vox Telecom launches uncapped voice service for ZAR 249

South African ISP Vox Telecom has launched an uncapped voice package for FTTH customers. It enables unlimited calls to mobile, national and local fixed lines and select international destinations, according to Mybroadband. Telkom enhances free WiFi for easy access, time management

Telkom has announced enhancements to its free Wi-Fi service to make it easier for non-Telkom customers to gain internet access and manage their time online. From 22 June, customers will be able to connect to Telkom Wi-Fi by registering once in two simple steps. Once registered and in a hotspot, they will be able to log in to their accounts with their user name and password, and connect with just one click.

MiRO to distribute Ruckus Wireless products in South Africa

South African IP convergence company MiRO is to distribute the Ruckus Wireless range of enterprise Wi-Fi products, IT-Online reoprted. MiRO decided to to market Ruckus Wireless' Xclaim brand in early 2015. Xclaim is touted as 'Wi-Fi for the non-IT guy' and targets small, medium-sized and micro enterprises (SMMEs) on a budget. Ruckus Wireless has 80 patents, including its BeamFlex technology, which allows more devices to connect to Ruckus access points with better signal strength while using less power.

Mweb switches Wi-Fi users to AlwaysOn

South African ISP Mweb has shut down its Wi-Fi service and is directing users to connect to AlwaysOn instead, MyBroadband reported. It said the closure comes as a surprise because Mweb was meant to retain its Wi-Fi service after Dimension Data company Internet Solutions agreed last year to buy Mweb Business and Mweb's Optinet Service and Network Divisions. Mweb retained its consumer ISP business, though its bandwidth contracts transferred to Internet Solutions.

Cape Town plans to expand Wi-Fi

The City of Cape Town says it will expand its Wi-Fi offering so that by the end of June 2015, free Wi-Fi will be provided at 61 City buildings across the metropolitan area. Wi-Fi will be provided inside public buildings, via its 102 SmartCape Computer facilities, and externally via 61 public access hotspots in areas where members of the public congregate and queue for services, said mayor Patricia de Lille, MyBroadband reported.
