Nokia to cut another 1,700 jobs Tuesday 17 March 2009 | 10:53 AM CET

Nokia announced plans to cut another 1,700 jobs as the global economic slowdown leads to lower demand for its mobile phones. Nokia said the workforce reduction will come at its Devices and Markets units as well as in its Corporate Development Office and global support functions. Nokia plans to scale back sales, marketing and technology management to match the reduced consumer demand, eliminate certain marketing and other activities that will no longer be needed following the acquisition of Symbian, streamline the Devices R&D organization and increase efficiency in certain global support functions. The changes are part of a broader cost-cutting plan aimed at protecting margins during the market slowdown. No details were given on the location of the job cuts.
