Indian mobile ARPU declines in March quarter Monday 13 July 2009 | 12:38 PM CET

Blended ARPU per month for GSM services in India decreased to INR 205 in the March quarter, down 6.82 percent from INR 220 in the December quarter, according to quarterly statistics from the Indian telecommunications regulator Trai. In the GSM segment, ARPU for postpaid service fell 2.8 percent to INR 543 from INR 559, and prepaid service declined 6 percent to INR 181 from INR 192. For CDMA services, the blended ARPU per month went down to INR 99 from INR 111. The postpaid ARPU for CDMA services was five times that of prepaid ARPU, which Trai attributed to the declining importance of processing fees on recharge vouchers purchased by prepaid subscribers. The total number of mobile subscribers increased 44.7 million to 391.76 million at the end of March. According to the regulator's report, there were 117.82 million mobile users accessing the internet over their phones in March. Total revenues for the telecommunication services sector in the three months to March reached INR 404.45 billion, up 2.63 percent from the previous quarter.
