AT&T and Telcel awarded 4G frequencies in Mexico
Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) announced that AT&T and Telcel will receive additional national blocks of frequencies for 4G services. The 80 MHz of spectrum assigned in the AWS (Advanced Wireless Services) band will generate revenues of around MXN 45 billion (plus annual compensation rights) to the Mexican state in the next 15 years. Also, the auction will result in a 29 percent increase in the spectrum available for the development of mobile broadband services in Mexico. Within the next 10 working days, the IFT will issue the corresponding decision, specific blocks of spectrum and the forecasts for the reordering of the frequencies previously assigned. 

Telcel (America Movil) will receive a total of 20 MHz nationwide in the AWS-1 band and 40 MHz nationwide in the AWS-3 band. The concessions are valid until 1 October 2030, and Telcel will pay a total of MXN 2.10 billion for the rights of use. AT&T will get 20 MHz (2x10) nationwide in the AWS-1 band, paying MXN 1 billion for the 15-year licence. The concessions will be granted upon compliance of certain requirements provided under the auction rules issued by the IFT.

Mexico's Telcel launches call for IoT-focused startups

Mexican mobile operator Telcel (America Movil) has teamed up with Startup Mexico (SUM) to launch "Conecta tu Mundo", an initiative aimed at finding Internet of Things (IoT) projects to be incubated and subsequently marketed by the operator. Telcel is looking for up to 10 products to connect to its network, with the successful projects awarded grants to cover the cost of incubation at SUM over a period of six months. Local entrepreneurs or tech companies have until 31 October to submit their proposals.

Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has issued the concessions for the 1710-1780 MHz/2110-2180 MHz frequency bands (AWS) to AT&T and Telcel, awarded at public auction in February. Earlier this month, Telcel informed the regulator that it completed work on the change of frequencies within the 1710-1755/2110-2155 MHz band, previously assigned, to make efficient use of the spectrum.

AT&T announced that its LTE mobile service is now available to 45 million users in 42 Mexican cities, compared to 44 million in 41 cities at the end of last year. AT&T inks 5-year agreements with European companies

AT&T said it has signed two five-year contracts with European companies. The telco will supply its highly secure global network to German global chemicals company Evonik Industries. Mexico mobile subscribers rise 5.93% to 107.1 mln

The number of mobile telephony subscribers in Mexico reached 107.1 million at the end of the third quarter, up 5.93 percent from the year before, according to data published by the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT). The mobile penetration rate reached 88 percent (+3%). Of all mobile telephony users, 83 percent were prepaid and the remaining 17 percent postpaid.

AT&T, Telcel to bid for 1,800 MHz spectrum

Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has approved the participation of AT&T and Radiomovil Dipsa in the bidding for 80 MHz in the 1,800 MHz band (1710-1780 MHz/2110-2180 MHz). Radiomovil Dipsa is a company of mobile operator Telcel (America Movil). The available frequencies are expected to support the deployment of LTE services throughout the country. Mexico to launch bidding for 2.5 GHz band by end of year

Brazil's Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) could launch an auction for the 2.5 GHz frequency band in the last quarter of 2016, reports El Economista. Alejandro Navarrete, director of radio frequency spectrum unit of IFT, said the auction could be carried out in the second half or the last quarter of the year and then the licences would be awarded in 2017.
