Bangladesh nearing 100 mln mobile subs
Bangladesh ended March with 99.871 million mobile subscribers, up from 98.593 million at the end of February. Grameenphone led the market with 41.79 million subscribers, growing from 41.00 million a month earlier, according to the figures from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). Banglalink followed with 25.92 million customers, up from 25.85 million, and Robi Axiata with 21.40 million, versus 21.29 million in February. Airtel's subscriber base grew to 7.47 million from 7.30 million while Citycell's customer base fell further to 1.45 million from 1.46 million a month earlier. State-run mobile operator Teletalk had 1.83 million subscribers in March, up from 1.69 million in the prior month.

Grameephone asked to explain promotion

The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has served a show cause notice to mobile operator Grameenphone, the Dhaka Tribune reports. The regulator says the operator violates a marketing directive as it has partnered with a newspaper for a quiz competition. Rules say that mobile operators may only offer talk time, SMS, and mobile handsets as promotional gifts, no other goods of value.

Robi launches Hoot Hut Chomok 32 package

Bangladeshi mobile operator Robi Axiata has introduced the "Hoot Hut Chomok 32" package. The package offers an 87 percent discount on on-net calls, pricing them at BDT 0.0433 per 10 seconds, and a 70 percent discount on off-net calls, charging BDT 0.10 per ten seconds. Customers can also select five numbers for discounted calls (three on-net and two off-net numbers). Customers can migrate to this package with a BDT 32 recharge.
