Cote d'Ivoire drafts cybercrime law

Tuesday 31 January 2012 | 08:55 CET | News
Cote d'Ivoire has become a major haven for internet fraud, Le Nouveau Reveil reports. People used to think mainly of Nigeria when it came to internet scams, but since that country passed a cybercrime law, villains have moved to Cote d'Ivoire, according to a police captain presenting his unit's work. He estimated that the crooks arrested by his division (59% of them Ivoirians) stole around XOF 14 billion (EUR 21 million) from mainly European victims between 2009 and 2011. Popular scams include lotteries, inheritance cons and love chat. A new law has been drafted in Cote d'Ivoire and awaits enactment.
