DSTV, Safaricom launch mobile TV service

Kenyan mobile service provider Safaricom and pay-TV operator DSTV have launched the first Kenyan commercial mobile TV service, available on selected handsets. The service will initially serve up 10 local and international channels including Super Sport Update, Super Sport 3, CNN and BBC World, among others. Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph said the mobile TV service can be viewed on DVB-H enabled handsets which will be available from DSTV dealers and Nairobi-based Safaricom retail outlets for KES 25,000. Subscription to the service will be free until 30 June, and from 1 July customers will pay a subscription fee of KES 1,000. Safaricom and DSTV have been working on the service for the past year.
