Dutch cable broadband outperforms DSL during Q2
Thursday 3 September 2009 | 10:14 CET
Growth on the Dutch broadband market slowed in the second quarter but the number of new cable customers rose notably and took precedence over new DSL clients for the first time since Telecompaper began reporting on the Dutch broadband market in 2003. The Dutch broadband market grew 0.4 percent to reach 5.808 million at end-June, translating into a net addition of 20,500, three times less than in the previous quarter, Telecompaper's quarterly update on the Dutch broadband market revealed. Cable won 15,000 new customers compared to 5,500 new DSL clients. Broadband (cable & ADSL) penetration per household increased to 79.9 percent at the end of the quarter, up 2.8 percentage points compared to the year before. When including FTTH connections, broadband penetration per household reached 81.5 percent. For the full year, Telecompaper expects growth of around 4.5 percent for the entire broadband market including FTTH, leading to a household penetration of around 83 percent with 6 million consumer broadband connections. Of all broadband ISPs, Tele2 reported the largest quarterly net additions with 13,000, followed by Ziggo with 10,500, and Internet van KPN with 10,000. Ziggo remains the largest broadband ISP with a market share of 24 percent, followed by Internet van KPN with 19.9 percent, UPC with 11.9 percent, Het Net with 11.7 percent and Tele2 with 6.5 percent.
