Ikanos unveils dual-core communications processors

Wednesday 14 September 2011 | 08:53 CET | News
Chipmaker Ikanos Communications has unveiled two new dual-core communications processors, the Fusiv Vx175 and Fusiv Vx173. The Ikanos chipsets build on the features of the company’s Fusiv family of processors and extend the range of access technologies and device types that can be supported by Ikanos products. With the Fusiv Vx175/173, service providers can deploy and manufacturers can build a range of devices including femtocell gateways, smart energy gateways, mobile broadband routers, optical networking terminals, network attached storage and other next generation services gateways. The Vx175/173 processors use the advancements from the previous Fusiv family while adding a range of advanced capacities. The Vx175/173 communications processors have two MIPS cores. In the Vx175, cores provide up to 600MHz processing power. The Vx173 cores run at 400MHz. With the dual cores, these products can handle femtocell stacks, VoIP and a range of other computational-intensive tasks. An integrated DSP engine delivers full-chain deployment proven VoIP, compliant of handling four voice channels simultaneously. In addition to the dual core MIPs processors, the Vx175/173 also includes programmable hardware accelerator processors to provide improved performance and quality of service. These enable bi-directional Gigabit routing performance while consuming a small fraction of the Fusiv’s processing power. The Vx175/173 includes a number of built-in interfaces including up to three Gigabit MACs, two PCIe and two USB 2.0 hosts that enable the processor to connect via many in-home distribution systems like Wi-Fi, MoCA, ZigBee, HomePNA, HomePlug, G.hn and other technologies for in-home content distribution.

The Vx175 has a built-in hardware encryption engine to protect traffic over the web without a performance penalty. The Vx175 has a built-in SATA interface for direct network attached storage (NAS) for the warehousing of local content. This content can be shared directly from the gateway throughout the home or passed via a secure connection to outside backup services or other cloud-based applications. The chipsets support European Code of Conduct and Home Gateway Initiative (HGI) energy efficiency requirements. Ikanos also provides a unified suite of software that includes operating system independent drivers for Ethernet, xDSL and integrated peripherals. This unified software package combines the support for all Fusiv communications processors, enabling equipment manufacturers to leverage their software resource investment across multiple product lines. The Linux-based software includes a networking stack, voice processing, and network management functions, making it possible for system vendors to develop advanced service gateways and integrated access devices.
