
India added 5.44 million telecom services customers in August. India’s total telephone subscriber base reached 951.8 million at 31 August, up 0.5 percent from 946.4 million at the end of July, according to figures from the Telecom Regularity Authority of India (Trai). The overall teledensity increased to 76.36 in August from 76 a month earlier.
India’s mobile subscriber base climbed 0.61 percent to 924.3 million at 31 August from 918.7 million in July. Private operators hold 90.16 percent of the mobile market share (based on subscriber base), while state-owned companies BSNL and MTNL hold 9.84 percent market share.
India’s fixed-line subscriber base declined to 27.52 million in ugust from 27.68 million in July. The net reduction in India’s fixed-line subscriber base was 0.16 million at the decline rate of 0.57 percent. BSNL and MTNL hold a share of 76.41 percent of the fixed-line market.
The Indian broadband subscriber base increased to 74.3 million at 31 August from 70.8 million a month earlier. Top five ISPs in terms of market share (based on subscriber base) are BSNL (18.32 million), Bharti (16.53 million), Vodafone (12.52 million), Idea Cellular (9.86 million) and Reliance Communications (6.64 million).
