
India's telephony base drops to 937.70 mln in September

The number of telephone subscribers in India fell to 937.70 million in September, down 0.20 percent from 939.57 million at the end of August, according to figures from the Telecom Regularity Authority of India (Trai). The overall teledensity reached 77.04, down from 77.28 a month earlier. The mobile subscriber base fell to 906.62 million from 908.36 million in the previous month, down by 0.19 percent, due to large scale disconnections by some operators. Private operators hold 88.43 percent of the mobile market share while state-owned providers BSNL and MTNL hold a 11.57 percent market share. Meanwhile, the fixed-line subscriber base declined from 31.21 million in August to 31.08 million in September. BSNL and MTNL hold 79.84 percent of the fixed-line market share. Furthermore, the broadband subscriber base has increased to 15.08 million from 14.82 million a month earlier. The top five ISPs in terms of market share (based on subscriber base) are: BSNL (9.58 million), Bharti Airtel (1.39 million), MTNL (1.06 million), You Broadband (0.72 million), and Hathway (0.37 million).
