KakaoTalk sees Indonesian user base surge to 13 mln

South Korean mobile messenger KakaoTalk has seen Indonesia overtake Japan as the foreign country with the most users of the app. Before localisation and marketing in Indonesia, KakaoTalk had around 500,000 users at the end of 2012. The number of registered users has now hit almost 13 million, the Jakarta Post writes citing KakaoTalk co-CEO, Sirgoo Lee. "It [the number one market] used to be Japan where it now has 12 million users," he said. Globally, the mobile messaging app has around 120 million users, with home-country Korea counting around 70 million registered users. In Indonesia, about 40 percent of users are on the BlackBerry platform while over 50 percent use Android devices.
