KT starts roll out of WiBro Wave 2
Korean operator KT has started work on rolling out its next-generation mobile broadband service, WiBro Wave 2. The company has signed an agreement with Gyeonggi Province, the largest and the most populated in South Korea, to start the roll-out there, reports the Korea Times. Including Suwon, Incheon and Guri, 19 cities in the province will benefit from the WiBro Wave 2 service from October. The service is expected to offer faster download speeds, downloading a 700 MB film in 120 seconds, according to the report. Better known as mobile WiMAX in other countries, WiBro is a high-speed mobile internet system that KT has been rolling out in major cities in South Korea. The so-called Wave 2 transmitters will simultaneously use multiple transmission antennas, and "smart" antennas will automatically focus radio waves in the direction of where data traffic is heaviest; engineers refer to this system as a "sunflower antenna". According to KT, around 160,000 customers were subscribing to the WiBro service at the end of April, and the operator is aiming for 400,000 subscribers by December.
