Microsoft unveils Windows Phone 8 Update

Microsoft has unveiled a Windows Phone 8 update that includes a bigger Start screen for more Live Tiles, a new customisable driving mode and better accessibility options. The update will be rolling out in the upcoming months. The bigger Start screen allows users to pin more people, info and apps they are interested in and built-in apps will be scaled to better utilise additional space on 6-inch screens. In addition to larger screens, Update 3 will also provide support for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor.

Another new feature, Driving Mode connects with a Bluetooth device and limits notifications on the lock screen while driving, including texts, calls and quick status alerts. Users also have the ability to configure Driving Mode to send automatic replies when they receive a call or text while driving.

The new Mobile Accessibility update for Windows Phone 8 provides a suite of apps, which includes a screen reader for blind and visually impaired users to more easily manage calls and contacts, send texts and emails, browse the web, make Skype and Lync calls and hear notifications. Update 3 has also made it easier for users to pair their phone and Windows 8.1 PC or tablet over Bluetooth. Users tap the network name and are automatically connected.

Additional performance features in the new update include: the ability to assign custom ringtones for contacts and text messages, a new rotation lock option, new storage settings, an app switcher that closes apps when a consumer is done using it, and improved connection quality for Bluetooth accessories.

In addition, Microsoft has introduced the Windows Phone Preview for Developers. The programme launching on 14 October offers app builders early access to operating system updates.
