Motorola Mobility net loss widens in Q4

Motorola Mobility reported fourth quarter revenues unchanged at EUR 3.43 billion from year earlier at 3.42 billion. The net loss amounted to USD 80 million or USD 0.27 per share from a net gain of 80 million or 0.27 per share the year earlier. Excluding one-off charges and amortisation, the net profit reached USD 61 million or USD 0.20 per share, from 108 million or 0.37 per share the year before. The Mobile Devices division posted sales up 5 percent year-on-year to USD 2.5 billion, impacted by increased competition. Motorola shipped 10.5 million devices in the quarter, including 5.3 million smartphones and 200,000 tablets. That compares to third quarter shipments of 11.6 million mobile devices, including 4.8 million smartphones and 100,000 tablets. The operating loss at the division went to USD 70 million from a profit of 72 million the year before. The Home division saw revenues fall 11 percent to USD 897 million, with an operating profit slightly higher at USD 57 million from 54 million. For the full year, set-top box shipments were up 6 percent compared to 2010¬. Cash, cash equivalents and cash deposits at the end of Q4 reached USD 3.6 billion. Motorola and Google entered a definitive takeover agreement. The transaction remains subject to various closing conditions.
