MTN Nigeria acquires Visafone
MTN Nigeria has agreed to acquire CDMA operator Visafone, ThisDay reports. While no financial details of the takeover were disclosed, sources told the daily the acquisition of the largest CDMA operator in the country is a multimillion naira deal. Visafone's additional spectrum is expected to help MTN boost its mobile internet coverage. According to the latest figures from industry regulator NCC, Visafone had around 63,000 customers at the end of September 2015.

MTN Nigeria has officially liquidated Visafone, bringing the country's CDMA network to an end, The Independent reported. The liquidation was completed during the first half of 2024 and all the remaining assets and liabilities of Visafone have been transferred to MTN.  MTN Nigeria acquired Visafone from Jim Ovia in 2016 with the aim of using Visafone's 800 MHz spectrum licences to enhance MTN's offerings, but the acquisition was complicated by regulatory issues.

Airtel, 9mobile oppose transfer of Visafone licence to MTN

Nigerian operators Airtel and 9mobile are opposing the transfer of an 800MHz license from Visafone Communications to MTN Nigeria, reports Vanguard. Representatives of the operators said that transferring the spectrum to MTN could result in a monopoly. Following the acquisition of Visafone by MTN in 2015, Visafone had applied to the regulatory agency for the transfer of its frequency and licence to MTN.

NCC clears transfer of Visafone stake to MTN but not licence

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it has approved the transfer of Visafone's shareholding to MTN Nigeria, and not the licence, reports Today.ng. Tony Ojobo, NCC's Public Affairs Director, said that a decision to transfer Visafone licence to MTN has not been taken. Ojobo said that this was contrary to the speculation that NCC had foreclosed the release of the spectrum held by Visafone to MTN.

MTN Group may abandon Visafone acquisition - report

MTN Group is considering abandoning the acquisition of Visafone after Nigeria's industry regulator ruled that broadband spectrum would not be included in the deal and because also of litigation arising from the deal, reports Bloomberg. However, MTN's integrated report for the year to end December 2015 says the telecoms operator had already concluded the deal. MTN said the acquisition will enable the group to improve the quality of broadband services for its subscribers.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has not approved yet the use of Visafone spectrum by MTN Nigeria in order to check the latter's increasing dominance in the market, reports ThisDay. MTN Nigeria ended 2015 with 61.3 million subscribers, up 2.3 percent compared to the previous year. Its market share reduced to an estimated 44.7 percent from 49.0 percent the previous year.
