MTN pays USD 250 mln towards Nigeria settlement
MTN Nigeria said it has paid USD 250 (NGN 50 billion) to the Nigerian authorities over a disputed USD 3.9 billion fine for failing to disconnect unregistered Sim card users. In a statement, MTN said it made the payment in good faith, on the basis that this will be applied towards a settlement, when one is eventually reached. MTN has agreed to withdraw the matter from the Federal High Court in Lagos. The statement said Phuthuma Nhleko, in his capacity as Executive Chairman of MTN Group and a director of MTN Nigeria, is continuing to lead the team engaging the Nigerian authorities with a view to settling the matter.

However, the Nigerian government has denied knowledge of any payment made by MTN. The Special Assistant to the Minister of Communications, Victor Oluwadamilare said that the development had not been made official as it was still under consideration by the federal government, Today.ng reported. He said the amount announced by MTN is not the fine they are expected to pay.
