MultiChoice unit DStv launches GoTV in Kenya
Wednesday 14 September 2011 | 12:27 CET |
News
MultiChoice unit DStv has launched a low-cost pay-TV product in partnership with state-owned Kenya Broadcasting Corporation to defend and expand its market share, Business Daily reported online. It is called GoTV and costs KES 585 per month for access to news, documentaries, sports and feature films. This makes Kenya the third country in Africa after Zambia and Uganda to access the latest MultiChoice product. DStv aims to use pricing to gain market share from its main rival, Wananchi. GoTV will be available at a special offer price of KES 6,255 which includes a decoder and a three-month subscription. GoTV will be transmitted through a digital platform and subscribers will not require a satellite dish, as DStv will use the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation transmission signal. When Business Daily went to press it was not clear what KBC would get out of the deal, but the newspaper cited players in the broadcast sector as saying MultiChoice was likely to pay it transmission fees.
