Orange Swiss 4G network launched earlier than planned
Orange Switzerland has launched its 4G network earlier than originally planned, and offers full use of 4G services to all pre-paid and post-paid customers, at no extra cost. Orange's 4G network will initially have population coverage of 35 percent with a maximum theoretical 4G speed of up to 100 Mbps. The 4G coverage is to be expanded to 71 percent by end-2013, and the download speed increased and step-by-step to up to 150 Mbps. To speed up the 4G expansion, Orange is increasing its investment by 25 percent to some CHF 100 million in second-half 2013. Orange Switzerland is also launching six new initiatives to enhance customer service. This includes allowing customers to get a new 4G device at any time, and a complete overhaul of the customer service hotline.
In Q1 2013, the operator registered operating revenue up 0.6 percent to CHF 286 million and adjusted EBITDA up 1.2 percent to CHF 87 million. Total revenue was stable at CHF 307 million. Using the same definition of PrePay customers as Swisscom, Orange had a total of 2.05 million customers at end-March, with ARPU of CHF 41 per month. Using the old definition, ARPU was CHF 51.70 with a total of 1.66 million, which is an increase of 48,000 or 3 percent from Q1 2012. While there was strong growth in new subscription customers (+61,000), there was drop in the number of PrePay customers (-13,000). The majority (64.7%) of all Orange customers are subscription customers.
