Sky planning to launch streaming service in Spain - report

Pay-TV giant Sky is planning to expand its European operations by launching its Now TV online streaming service in Spain, reports the Sunday Telegraph. The move would mark the first time Sky has entered a market where it has no satellite operation and would pave the way to entering other untapped European territories, said the report, adding that a secret team has been working on the launch of Now TV in Spain for over a year. The service would cost around EUR 10 per month, converting Now TV into a direct rival to Netflix, which launched a standalone service in Spain at the end of last year.

Spain has one of the most extensive superfast broadband networks in Europe but only around 27 per cent of Spanish homes currently have a pay-TV subscription, compared to nearly two thirds of British households. The report adds that Sky is hoping its OTT service will attract the large proportion of Spaniards who cite cost as the main barrier to subscribing to pay-TV.
