New fibre-based connections increased by 127,735 in February, the sixth consecutive month of 100,000-plus accesses, according to the latest monthly data released by telecoms regulator CNMC. Total FTTH accesses reached 1.81 million, over a million more than the year-earlier figure of 695,687, more than compensating for the decline of other broadband technologies such as ADSL, which shed 105,683 lines in February. The total number of fixed broadband lines stood at 12.8 million, a 6.3 percent year-on-year rise, while broadband penetration has risen to 27.5 lines per 100 inhabitants.
In terms of operators, Orange led the monthly net fixed broadband gains with 19,037 more customers than in January, followed by Telefonica with a 13,331 gain, Ono with a net add of 9,200 and Jazztel with 6,139 more lines. Vodafone, however, shed 3,300 broadband subscriptions, a situation it is hoping to reverse with the Vodafone One multi-play convergent offers launched in conjunction with Ono.
