Star Times launches pay TV in Uganda

A new pay-TV service called Star Times DTV has been launched in Uganda, the New Vision reports. There are now five pay-TV services in Uganda - Multichoice, Pearl Digital TV, JR Net, Metropo Cable and Star Times DTV. The firm's CMO Kevin Chen said the company plans to introduce live football channels to step up the competition. Currently, Multichoice is the only pay TV which airs live football. It charges about UGX 350,000 for the initial installation and UGX 110,000 for monthly subscription. Star Times DTV charges an initial installation fee of UGX 120,000 and its monthly subscription fee is UGX 15,000 for 36 channels and UGX 25,000 for 40 channels. Chen said ther aim is to make pay-TV affordable to all Ugandans. He said his firm has 30,000 subscribers and will add football matches once the numbers increase further. Multichoice, the pioneer of pay-TV in Uganda, has about the same number of subscribers. Chen added that they would be expanding to Mbarara and Gulu districts by next year. Star Times DTV is Chinese owned and also operates in about 10 countries in Africa, with its headquarters in Beijing, China.

I salute you for your efforts to offer us affordable digital tv services. I have one issue to put across. I received an sms promo message on my mobile phone yesterday. Part of the message said that if I pay subscription for any bouquet for 3 months, I will be offered one month free; I thought this was good for me and responded this afternoon by paying a subscription of 23,000/= x 3 = 69,000/=. I paid like this because earlier, in November, I had seen another advert on the screen that the bouquet which used to cost Ug shs 30,000/= has now been reduced to Ugx 23,000/= per month. When I responded to the sms advert today afternoon by paying 69,000/= for 3 months and expected automatic adjustment on the bouquet and the fourth month bonus.This did not happen; when I called Customer Care to enquire, I was informed that the offer is only meant for new customers - this worried me. I made a statement that why seggregate us who statrted and suffered with StarTimes at the very beginning; I got unconvincing explanations and one time the Customer Care Lady hanged up on me. My question now is: How am I going to be assisted to get the value for my money which I paid today? Another option is for me to complete my subscrition due and return your Decoder as I will not have any more use for it. After all I sometimes tried to enquire why some of the channels which used to be in the 15,000/= bouquet was removed and and taken to that of 30,000/= without any convincing raporteur, I was instead abused. Startimez plz help me. Today 9/10/2012 i paid with payway at a tuskys supermarket. It was a classic bouquet of 30000 but when i reached home i got channels of 15k. Please change today 10/10/2012. I love e! And nickoledeon. Yes i was watching of 15k twice but i want of 30. Is there anything like a decorder that shows only for 15. My card is 02036635148.

What happened to the star times? are they still in operation? if they closed shop, they should inform their customers so that we get other service providers. I paid my subscription yesterday the 27/8/2012 using mobile money but up to today,28/8/2012, it tells me that not subscribed, Not accessible, yet it should be automatic. I think this will be my last month with star times, i have been loyal for two years but i finally give up. We have been complaining for so long and nothing has been done. CLOSE IF YOU HAVE FAILED TO DELIVER.

hey, i am willy from kenya. i was among many innocent kenyans who bought the decoder at a cost of kes 6700, immediately when it was introduced last year, it's now several months since we bought it but our cards were not activated, signals are bad, many channels got lost and now it bits the logic why we bought it. When will this company roll on services in kenya or we were conned? I wrote on mail to a customer care services in kenya and he promised me they were about to roll on, again many months have past and nothing happening. I bought a Star Times decoder from Wandegeya shop on 21/Dec/2011 with one months free subscription but today 29/Dec/2011 all channels except UBC is accessible. The rest of the channels show no subscription. Unfortunately the customer care contacts are inaccessible. Smart card serial No 02036601512

I am runnng away to pay for the dstv decorder ...star times made sure most of the important channels we were viewing at 15000 were no longer accessible until you pay 30,000; the service is also constantly poor with ''no signals'' on most channels. Most disappointing is the disconnection of NTV, Citizen, and other local channels which are ordinarily viewed.

I always pay using mobile money monthly with out delay but I have consistently lost chanels. all the kids channels are off and all in all I have only about 10 channels. this has gone on for some time now. Card 02036533182

hey i loaded 15000sh on 28th may 2011, however i have been disconnected today 8th may june 2011. What is the problem? my card number is 02036528058. NB: I have called several times today but with no one responding unfortunately all my airtime was consumed.But how can a custmer's airtime be consumed for nothing apart from listening to that melody in te background? my fon numbers are 0701557309 and 0782399753

am very dissappointed by management of startimes.You ring the so called hotline 0417117700 and no body is there to respond to a call.Recently a bought an external antenna and installed it myself, but there is alot of skiping. what should i do to rectify this problem. Can you advise on the frequency to use to set the decoder in order do away with the problem of skipping? What else can i do to solve this problem? Should we have hope of watching live premier league matches this coming season 2011/12? Please reply to help me enjoy startimes Dtv services.

Sound Quality is a big problem not equalized well please check on that Mostly BET its a music channel u can not enjoy it with that kind of sound.

Why is it that after adding new channels most of the local channels and some international channels disappeared? and when they appear they are not clear they skip like cracked CDs. I miss NTV,E-Entertainment, UBC and BUKEDDE.

My very disappointed with startimes, i loaded recharged card and it was not activitised for more than 14 hours, then call their so called the hotline 0417117700 for more than 10 times with an average of 5 minutes each no one call the call and they continue to play their meanless music while charging the call, is that what startimes means by hotline, please try to care for your customers, am very very very appointment

It's realy good but yesterday it searched for channel and somejust dissapeard!!!!!!!!!! like nickelodeon, ubc, and some others. and then other channels came! i want nickelodeon back and if it's possible, i want to see live premier league.or put manchester tv...

some of the local channel which is programm in the decorder is chesing away customer no to subcribe like record tv wth excetion of NTV, WBS,ubctv, and why not to include atleast CITIZEN FROM KENYA, CAPITAL TZ as you alway advertised that all these channel is liable for change.

we are great full that other service providers like you are in so that there comes competition and that will bring down the price citing the changes taking place in the telecommunication companies,However taking into account people like me staying up-country namely JINJA,these services are far from near our enjoyment,Nevertheless we pray that you send some sales representatives to establish the availability of some clients within our region so as to reap from your presence in the country.Hoping to get your positive response as soon as possible.

hey i loaded my subscription yesterday at about 5pm,at your main offices but when i reached home, i couldn't see any channels despite the fact that i had properly laid out everything in place. What could be the problem? my smart number card is 020 3651 3728.please help.
