Taiwan, China open cross-strait communications cable

An undersea fibre cable linking China and Taiwan, called Cross-Strait Fiber-Optic 1, was opened on 18 January, Xinhua reports. This is the first communications cable to directly link the Chinese mainland with Taiwan. The 270-km cable links Fuzhou, the capital of China's Fujian Province, with Tamsui in Taiwan and was jointly constructed by China Unicom, China Mobile, China Telecom and Taiwan-based Far EasTone, Taiwan Mobile, Taiwan International Gateway, and Chunghwa Telecom.
