Verizon starts 5G field tests
Ericsson announced it's supplying 5G radio prototypes to Verizon for live field trials. In 5G field trials held in February, Ericsson's radio prototypes hit more than 10 Gbps peak throughput while supporting beamforming and beam tracking features. In the Verizon field trial, the Ericsson radios, mounted outdoors, delivered high-definition video streaming to devices located indoors, emulating a residential customer environment. 

Ericsson's prototypes, first introduced in November 2015, transmit signals using beamforming, which extends the reach of the high frequency bands and allows a user device to be serviced by multiple beams. Beam tracking then monitors the quality of connections available to the device and switches between beams to ensure the best user experience at all times. Ericsson is also testing the technology in Sweden, Japan and Korea. 

Verizon said it was also working with Nokia, Samsung Electronics America and Qualcomm on technical alignment and developing field networks for testing the characteristics of 5G technology in real-world environments. The US operator's 5G Technology Forum, which includes vendors as well venture capital groups focused on emerging technology, is working collaboratively to drive technical standards for 5G technology.

The latest field tests mimic real-world scenarios using millimeter wave bands, including bands in the FCC’s Notice for Proposed Rulemaking for 5G spectrum. In addition to the field trials being conducted with each of the partners, the following elements are being assessed across all sites: antenna innovation with millimeter and centimeter wave spectrum using various deployment conditions; beamforming, beam tracking, massive MIMO and wideband spectrum (200 MHz – 1 GHz swaths); and deployment flexibility and antenna form factors including size with mmWave antennas. The company said it will expand testing "significantly" in the coming months, with the aim of keeping up with Asian counterparts that plan to launch 5G in 2017.
