Houten, The Netherlands, 08 July 2011 - In the market just over four out of ten renew their postpaid subscription, among HTC and Apple handset users this is more than half of the users who do this. Others buy a new postpaid or new prepaid subscription. Apple and HTC, as well as Blackberry, have very few prepaid users. Nokia has the largest market share; one third of all the mobile phone users is using Nokia. The smartphone brands, HTC, Apple and Blackberry, see an increase in market share. The results are based on an online survey conducted in January to March 2011 among 22,000 Dutch consumers. The report 'Dutch Mobile Consumer Q1-2011 – Handset Edition' from independent market researcher Telecompaper also includes data from the two previous quarters on consumer mobile habits and spending.
The report furthermore shows that Blackberry has the youngest users; 50 percent of the customer base is younger than 30 years. Nokia has the oldest users; 60 percent is older than 40 years. It also shows that more than half of the Apple users are clients at T-Mobile, but that T-Mobile is losing some of its Apple share to Vodafone.
As already communicated earlier this months, 42 percent of Dutch consumers bought their mobile connection – either postpaid or prepaid – on the internet. This is an increase of 8 percent compared to Q3 2010. Especially for postpaid connections this is more common. Apple’s iPhone is sold more in shops compared to the other handsets.
Also communicated in the press release of the previous report is that most Dutch consumers said they spent less on mobile telephony services in the first quarter of 2011 compared to the third quarter of 2010. Monthly costs are the most important reason why Dutch consumers choose a specific provider, especially for postpaid users. For prepaid users the price of the handset and promotional offers most often determine their choice of operator.
The report Dutch Mobile Consumer 2011-Q1- Handset Edition gives detailed information on the demographics of the consumers, their sales channel, reason for selecting a provider, average spending, most used services and use of additional bundles next to the current subscription. The report is available for purchase in two different editions. This edition gives insight per used handset brand: Nokia, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, HTC, Apple, Blackberry, handset from operator and Other. The other edition, which is published two weeks ago, gives insight per mobile service provider: Hi, KPN, Telfort, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Tele2, and Others. Both reports discuss the following aspects:
