Steps taken to reduce mobile phone costs abroad
This chart shows how Dutch consumers (15-65 yrs) use their mobile phone when abroad, including preparations before a trip. Do they taken action to prevent a high mobile bill? Data is for July, August and September 2012 (n=2,714) and November 2011 (n=2,136). The charts show the answer to the question: "Which of the following steps do you take regarding mobile calling, SMS and mobile data usage when going abroad or when you are abroad? Please think of your last holiday abroad." There were fourteen actions included in the answers: Before my holiday, I make sure to add an international holiday option to my subscription; I add a special holiday option to my subscription after receiving a 'country border SMS'; I add a special international holiday option to my bundle during my vacation; I allow my provider to completely block mobile internet access ; I bring my mobile phone with me, but only use it in emergencies; I buy a local prepaid SIM for cheaper calls and SMS; I buy a local prepaid SIM in order to use cheaper mobile data; I do use my mobile phone but to a lesser extent; I leave my phone at home; I look for Wi-Fi hotspots in order to use the internet; I switch off data roaming ; I switch off my voicemail; I try to look in advance for ways of reducing costs; On holiday I prefer sending SMS to calling; None of these.
