Consortium to build SE Asia, ME, WEurope undersea cable
A number of leading telecom companies have formed a consortium to build an undersea South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe (SEA-ME-WE) 5 cable. The cable would span 20,000 km and connect 17 countries, through points of presence (PoPs) from Singapore to the Middle East, to France and Italy in Western Europe. The new SEA-ME-WE 5 cable system should start carrying commercial traffic by early 2016, with 100 Gbps technology. Fully loaded, it will be able to carry 24,000 Gbps of capacity. SingTel made the announcement, saying that 95 percent of today's voice, video and data traffic was transmitted via subsea data highways.

Telekom Malaysia (TM) and NEC have announced they have completed the landing of the South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5) submarine cable system at Melaka, Malaysia. NEC is in charge of deploying the segment spanning from Singapore to Sri Lanka, including the Malaysia branch.

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has announced the construction of the new Southeast Asia-Middle East- Western Europe (SEA-ME-WE 5) submarine cable system has started. The 20,000 kilometre system is expected to be ready for service by the second half of 2016.

Vocus acquires Telecom's 10% stake in Sea-Me-We 3 cable

Australian and New Zealand wholesale IP transit and voice supplier Vocus Communications agreed to acquire Telecom New Zealand's 10 percent stake in the Sea-Me-We 3 cable between Perth and Singapore. The acquisition price reaches USD 2.5 million. The cable, which is currently the only undersea cable connecting Perth to Asia, has a design capacity of 140Gbps, and will be upgraded later this year to 300 Gbps. The undersea cable is 100G capable and it is expected there will be further upgrades in coming years.

NEC has signed a contract with the South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5) consortium. The SEA-ME-WE 5 system will span 20,000 km from Singapore to Europe, and will deliver ultra-broadband capacity and faster access to consumers and businesses.
