Egotel to launches operations in Tanzania in January

Wednesday 15 December 2010 | 13:33 CET | News
Tanzania's new mobile operator Egotel expects to launch its services next month, two years after obtaining an operating licence. Egotel, a brand name of Epocha & Golden Ocean, said it delayed the launch because of the global financial crisis that adversely affected the firm's investment programmes. Egotel's Resident Director Abdallah Mnende told the Daily News that the crisis was now almost over, enabling them to continue with their plans. The firm paid USD 2 million for the operating licence as required by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). He added in the next three weeks they will be in a better position to go on air after securing USD 200 million, enough to launch services in two regions. The cost of networking Dar es Salaam alone, Mnende said, is between USD 80 million and USD 100 million. Egotel said it will start with GSM services to consolidate its customer base and gradual embark on 3G services. Tanzania has 13 licensed mobile phone service providers, but only seven are active providers.
