Ethiopia mobile subscriber base grows to 18 million

The Ethiopian government announced that mobile subscriptions in the country have reached 18 million. ICT Minister Debretsion Gebremichael told the opening of the 2nd Annual Ethiopian ICT Entrepreneurship Conference in Addis Ababa that of 18 million, some 3.4 mobile subscribers are internet users. The aim is to reach 45 million subscribers by the end of the 2014. According to the World Bank, Ethiopia's population totaled just under 85 million in 2011. He noted that mobile coverage of the country had now reached 73 percent, and the government was working on plans to introduce mobile money services in the East African country.
