ICANN, CTU to boost internet adoption, use across Caribbean
ICANN and the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) have signed a MoU to increase cooperation and coordination among both organizations. The CTU will collaborate with ICANN to increase awareness and usage of the internet and its resources in the Caribbean. ICANN and CTU plan to start implementing concrete actions in the upcoming weeks. Actions are planned to include capacity building, partnering for outreach events and fostering multistakeholder dialogue at the regional and national levels.

Internet users could see more than 1,300 new domain names in the next eighteen months, said Akram Atta Allah, president of the global domain division at the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), Gulf News reported. ICANN has received a total of 1,930 applications for new domain names. Atta Allah said that 100 new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) are now waiting to go live soon. Some 250 companies have registered for '.Shabaka', the Arabic for 'internet'.

UpperLink encourages .ng domain uptake with free hosting

Nigeria's UpperLink has introduced a scheme aimed at encouraging the use of Nigeria's Country Code Top Level Domain. The company, which belongs to the Nigerian Internet Registration Association, said it is running a promotion to allow people registering an .ng domain name through UpperLink to have it hosted free for one year.
