iPad wins 85% tablet market share in France - study

Thursday 27 January 2011 | 10:16 CET | News
Apple's iPad dominated the tablet market in France in 2010, with 370,000 units sold out of a total of 435,000 overall tablet sales since its launch in March (85%), GfK estimates based on a survey of 28,000 points of sale in the country. In December alone 160,000 tablets were sold by Apple, Samsung and Archos. GfK forecasts that over 1 million tablets will be sold in France this year thanks to greater product choice and lower prices. The market researcher anticipates that of 6.5 million portable computers to be sold in 2011, 4.1 million will be notebooks, 1.4 million netbooks and 1 million tablets. This compares to 5.5 million portable computer unit sales in 2010, with 3.8 million notebooks, 1.3 million netbooks and over 400,000 tablets. GfK also found that French mobile phone sales rose to 24.7 million units in 2010 from 23.6 million a year earlier. Within the total, smartphone sales grew 114 percent to 7.7 million from 3.6 million units and standard mobile phone sales dropped to 17 million from 20 million. Smartphones' share of the mobile phone market is projected to hit 53 percent this year, versus 31 percent in 2010. Only 116,000 3D TVs were sold in France last year.
