Australia's New Year's Eve data traffic to jump 47% year-on-year
Telstra expects Australians to download around 1500 terabytes of data this New Year’s Eve period, which represents an increase of 47 percent year-on-year. Telstra predicts there will be 47 million calls from mobiles, up 15 percent compared to the same period in 2016, and around 91 million SMS sent.

Peak texting is expected to begin just as the New Year starts. Back in 2016, more than 4.1 million text messages were sent between midnight and 1:00 hours. 

Telstra also reports that 9 in 10 Australian mobile phone owners are currently using a smartphone with data usage on its mobile network.

Alle mobiele providers zien verschuiving van sms, spraak naar data tijdens oudjaar. Telenor Norway meldt dat het verkeer via de messagingdienst Snapchat gedurende oudjaarsavond 430 procent hoger lag dan op een reguliere dag. Het verkeer via Facebook lag een derde hoger dan normaal en voor Instagram gold een stijging van 40 procent. De provider zegt dat er tijdens oudjaarsavond vooral meer foto's en video's werden gedeeld. Het gebruik van mobiel internet viel sowieso hoger uit, zo'n 50 procent.

The Austrian Forum for Mobile Communication (FMK), founded in 1996 as a voluntary representation of interests for the Austrian mobile industry and whose members include the operator A1 Telekom Austria, EQOS, Huawei, Hutchison Drei Austria, ms-CNS, Samsung, Sony Mobile, SPL Tele, T-Mobile Austria, ZTE and FEEI (Association of the Electrical and Electronics Industry), has published traffic estimates for the New Year's Eve communication.

Oi boosts mobile network in Rio ahead of New Year's Eve

Brazilian operator Oi said it will increase the capacity of mobile antennas already installed in Copacabana Beach, in order to meet the expected increase in voice and data traffic during the New Year celebrations. The location will be the main point of concentration in Rio de Janeiro for the arrival of the New Year. Oi will also strengthen coverage with the temporary activation of four mobile phone stations. About 2 million people are expected to attend the celebrations.
