Kcell offers new FMC plans under Activ brand

Kazakhstan operator Kcell has introduced the new convergent package 'Activ At Home' to subscribers using services under its Activ brand. The packages includes fixed broadband at up to 500 Mbps, as well as mobile connections on up to seven SIMs. Customers will be able to share voice, data and SMS packages across the lines. The line includes Optimum and Premium tariff plans, starting from KZT 5,990.

France's Covage acquires 450 km fibre network from regional operator Trinap

Covage, the wholesale arm of French telecom infrastructure group Altitude, has strengthened its presence in eastern France by acquiring a 450-km fibre network located across the territories of Alsace and Franche-Comte. Local operator Trinaps decided to sell this infrastructure to focus entirely on service provision, ensuring continuity for clients by becoming a wholesale client of Covage.

EU approves sale of Sparkle to Italian govt-led consortium

The European Commission has cleared Telecom Italia's sale of its submarine cable unit Sparkle to the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and fibre operator Retelit for a total of EUR 700 million including debt. The transaction announced over a year ago was approved on the grounds that it did not raise serious antitrust concerns, in that there would remain several viable alternative providers in the market for cable landing stations for submarine cables and related backhaul activities.

Norwegian communications regulator Nkom has announced plans to devise fibre infrastructure categories and standards in order to improve their protection. Siro full-fibre network passes 700,000 premises across Ireland

Siro, Irish wholesale fibre network operator, said its network has passed 700,000 premises across Ireland, reaching 153 towns and cities across every county. The company is now calling for decommissioning of the old copper network to be accelerated, with more than 85 percent of all premises in Ireland now having access to full-fibre broadband.

Altibox Carrier says Verena submarine cable contract takes effect

Altibox Carrier has announced that the contract for the Verena submarine cable system is now in force, marking the formal start of delivery. Verena will span approximately 630 km across the North sea from Scarborough, UK to Esbjerg, Denmark. The sixteen fibre-pair line will have 512 Tbps capacity and should be ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2028.

Kcom Group FY revenue falls nearly 6% to GBP 96 million

Kcom Group, Hull, UK-based telecoms company, has reported revenue of GBP 96.21 million for the 12 months ending 31 March 2025, down 5.6 percent from GBP 101.89 million a year earlier. Accounts filed with Companies House show that EBITDA was down 5.9 percent to GBP 39.91 million, from GBP 42.39 million in FY24, after implementing several cost savings initiatives.

South Africa publishes draft rules on network infrastructure reporting

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has published draft regulations that will compel every licensed network operator to submit detailed data about their fibre, towers, ducts, poles and planned roll-outs on a bi-annual basis, TechCentral reported. The draft rules on the rapid deployment of electronic communications networks and facilities were gazetted on 10 April and give effect to a policy issued by the communications minister in March 2023. Public comments are open for 30 work

Open Infra ends open access fibre partnership with Premium Netz

German fibre-optic network operator Open Infra said it has decided to end its open access partnership with service provider Premium Netz (Filiago), meaning that Premium Netz will no longer offer fibre connections through the Open Infra network. Existing lines remain fully functional and internet access is ensured through a temporary agreement with InternetNord. The Federal Network Agency has been informed of the situation and of the measures taken.

Over 6,000 Kildare premises connected to NBI network

National Broadband Ireland (NBI) confirmed that over 6,000 homes, farms and businesses in County Kildare have now connected to the NBI network. This gives it a fibre broadband take-up rate of 44 percent in the county, compared to an average of 37 percent nationwide. The NBI network is currently available to more than 14,000 premises across County Kildare.

Millicom, owner of Tigo-branded operations across Latin America, has signed a long-term commercial agreement with Trans Americas Fiber System (TAFS) to enhance its international network infrastructure in Central America. The deal will integrate Millicom into the TAM-1 subsea cable project, expanding the company's capacity and resilience to meet the region's growing demand for reliable digital connectivity.

Openreach awarded BDUK Project Gigabit contract for Peak District

Openreach has signed a contract change with BDUK to expand an existing Project Gigabit contract covering Staffordshire to include the Derbyshire Peak District area, after a contract with FullFibre was terminated. Openreach will now work to connect Peak District premises due to be covered by this contract.

Mexico's CFE installs free internet access points in over 6,000 schools and health centres

Mexico's state-owned operator CFE Telecomunicaciones e Internet para Todos (CFE-TEIT) said it has teamed up with the country's Social Security Institute (IMSS) and Ministry of Public Education (SEP) to install free internet access points (PAIG) in over 6,500 establishments. Specifically, in 2025 alone, CFE-TEIT set up some 3,180 access points in health clinics and 3,483 in tele-schools nationwide, benefiting thousands of rural communities.

CRTC invites new applications for Broadband Fund

The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecoms Commission (CRTC) is seeking new proposals for its Broadband Fund to help boost internet access for Canadians. The programme helps territorial, provincial and federal governments to connect underserved remote, rural and Indigenous communities. The Broadband Fund has helped more than 320 communities to date, including 135 Indigenous communities.

LiveOak Fiber agrees new USD 425 million credit facility

LiveOak Fiber has agreed a USD 425 million credit facility with Oak Hill Advisors and Palistar Capital. This will be used to expand its full-fibre FTTH network across the Southeast region of the US. LiveOak delivers fibre broadband connectivity to communities across Florida and Georgia. CEO Shane Schilling said the new funding would help accelerate its network build and growth.

Avicca welcomes French Senate vote on cross-subsidies to support rural fibre networks

Avicca, which represents the interests of French local authorities in digital issues, has welcomed the backing given by the Senate to proposed legislation designed to ensure the long-term financial viability of public-initiative fibre networks. It aims to establish a cross-subsidy mechanism to equalise tariffs, redirecting funds from profitable networks in densely populated cities towards rural areas where the deploy

Corning expands fibre logistics unit outside Lodz

Corning has started construction of its third production and logistics unit in the town of Strykow outside Lodz. The project was announced by Segro, the company managing the logistics park and building and operating the site on behalf of Corning. The investment is worth around PLN 330 million and is expected to create an additional 2,500 jobs.

WindTre debuts ad campaign for latest broadband plus energy offer

Italian operator WindTre has launched a new advertising campaign starring longtime brand ambassador Rosario Fiorello for its latest fixed line plus electricity and gas offer. In the 30-second ad, Fiorello and a customer enter a WindTre store speaking very fast, with the assistant inviting them to catch their breath and save time and money by signing up to an all-in-one offer. The final slogan is: "WindTre Simplifies: Connections, Energy, Insurance".

SoftBank has expanded its fixed-mobile bundling offer and announced a new fibre broadband service, alongside planned pricing changes for its fixed-line portfolio. The operator said it will extend eligibility for its "Ouchi Wari Hikari Set" discount to include apartment-wide internet services provided by the FreeBit group, with applications opening in June 2026. This will allow residents in designated apartment buildings using bulk internet services to receive monthly discounts on SoftBank and Y!mobile mobil

EE research highlights Brits' TV watching etiquette red-flags

UK operator EE has published new research on the nation's TV viewing habits, with Brits spending an average of 20 hours a week sat down watching TV, and more than 4 in 10 Brits (43%) saying watching TV was their favourite part of the day. The research highlights a clear set of green-flag and red-flag behaviour relating to TV and sofa etiquette - with over one third (39%) of Brits judging others on their bad TV/sofa behaviour.

Vodafone Spain has launched a new advertising campaign starring Goya award-winning actor Luis Zahera to promote its latest convergent offer with pay-TV content. Altice France shortlists four bidders in sale of XpFibre stake - report

Four investment firms are competing to acquire the 50.01 percent holding in French fibre venture XpFibre that Altice put up for sale earlier this year, according to information gathered by Le Monde. Following a first round of bids, the candidates moving to the next stage of the process are reportedly Brookfield Infrastructure Partners, DigitalBridge, KKR, and Vauban Infrastructure Partners.

Scottish startup Vector Photonics has completed what is claimed to be the first post-laboratory demonstration of an optical communications link powered by photonic crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL) technology. The trial deployed Vector's PCSEL lasers in a free space optical communication system built and designed by Fraunhofer's UK subsidiary.
