Spanish ICT group Indra has announced the appointment of Francesco Pieri as Chief Financial Officer for Italy, succeeding Andrés Díez. The executive, who has been with Indra since 2018, will take over responsibility for the entire finance function in the country.

FiberCop acquires Genoa and Padua properties

Italian wholesale operator FiberCop has announced the acquisition of two strategic properties located in the northern cities of Genoa and Padua from Central Sicaf, a company owned by Covivio. The buildings already serve as operational sites for FiberCop and are two of the main Points of Presence (PoPs) of the operator's national telecommunications backbone.

Italian B2B-focused fibre provider Retelit, owned by Spanish infrastructure fund Asterion Industrial Partners, has announced the appointment of Guido Bertinetti as its Chief Operating Officer, tasked with bringing recent investments to full operational capacity, while expanding and strengthening the company's network and data centre infrastructure to enable the widespread adoption of AI and other technologies.

Aruba.it to continue as Ducati superbike sponsor

Italian ISP and cloud services provider Aruba.it said it will continue as the sponsor of the superbike team of Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati for the 12th consecutive year. The Aruba.it Racing – Ducati team was presented at an event held in the Auditorium inside the Aruba Data Centre Campus in Ponte San Pietro (Bergamo) at which the new Ducati Panigale V4 R superbike was unveiled.

Iliad Italia backs science roadshow

Italian operator Iliad Italia said it will again be supporting a roadshow visiting six cities over the coming months to bring boys and girls closer to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The company has worked with the non-profit association Il Cielo Itinerante on the project since 2022, providing over 200 hours of training for over 1,400 participants.

Digi Italia authorised to apply roaming surcharges until Feb 2027

Italian communications regulator Agcom has approved an application from MVNO Digi Mobil to continue opting out of the roam-like-at-home requirement in the EU after confirming that it will be unable to cover the corresponding roaming costs. Under the EU regulation, operators can opt out of roam-like-at-home and continue to apply regulated surcharges if they can prove to their national watchdog that they will lose money if forced to apply the measure.

Italy to create EUR 700 mln fund to complete gigabit fibre plan

The Department for Digital Transformation of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and investment agency Invitalia have signed an agreement to boost to the deployment of ultra-broadband infrastructure in Italy via the newly-created National Connectivity Fund. The facility has a budget of EUR 733 million to ensure the grey area objectives of the 'Italia a 1 Giga' project are fully met.

Italian inflation down to 1.0% in January

Italy's main domestic inflation rate (NIC) fell to 1.0 percent annually in January, down from 1.2 percent in December, according to preliminary data from statistics agency Istat. The fall was primarily due to higher food and transport prices, partly offset by lower transport prices, partly offset by higher unprocessed food prices.

Italian retail sales fall sharply in December, e-commerce up over 3%

Italy's retail sales decline 0.8 percent in value and 0.9 percent in volume in December compared to November, following recent monthly rises, according to the latest preliminary data from national statistics office Istat. Pharmaceutical products (+4.6%) plus cosmetic and toilet articles (+3.8%) increased the highest in Decision, while the steepest decline was seen in tools (-3.4%) and shoes, leather goods and travel items (-3.3%).

Open Fiber activates FTTH in Tuscan locality of Montecarlo

Italian wholesale-only operator Open Fiber said it has completed the cabling of its FTTH infrastructure in Montecarlo, a locality in the northern Tuscany region. A total of 2,208 homes, commercial premises and offices have been connected to the fibre network, allowing residents and businesses to access the internet at gigabit speeds via operator partners.

Retelit to invest EUR 100 mln in new Milan data centres

Italian B2B-focused fibre provider Retelit, owned by Spanish infrastructure fund Asterion Industrial Partners, has announced plans to invest EUR 100 million to build two new AI-ready data centres in Milan's Bisceglie district, expanding its existing Avalon Campus as part of efforts to strengthen Italy's digital infrastructure. The company acquired the real estate complex for the project from Melpart.

TIM upgrades 5G and network capacity for Milano Cortina 2026 Games

Telecom Italia (TIM) said it has upgraded its fixed and mobile networks across key venues, mountain resorts and transport routes for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, aiming to provide high-speed connectivity during the event and leave a lasting digital legacy. As the Games' Official Telecommunications Partner, TIM said it will deliver advanced 5G and ultra-broadband coverage at competition sites, key facilities and along more than 1,300 km of connecting routes.

Vodafone Italia activates Wi-Fi calling

Italian operator Fastweb+Vodafone announced the launch of Wi-Fi calling (VoWi-Fi) for all residential and business clients of Vodafone Italia around 18 months after Fastweb debuted the service. Initially, it will be available to no extra cost to customers with Samsung and Google smartphone and tablet models, with plans to extend the service to additional device manufacturers and new models in the coming months.

Samsung mobile devices to complement Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic coverage

Samsung has announced a series of technology initiatives ahead of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, which it is supporting in a number of ways. The company said its Galaxy S25 Ultra smartphones will play a central role in broadcast coverage of the Opening Ceremony on 06 February, where more than 75,000 spectators and 3,500 athletes are expected to gather at Milan's San Siro Stadium.

Italy authorises use of 8,000 radio frequencies during Winter Olympics

Italy's Ministry of Business and Made in Italy (MIMIT) has authorised the use of around 8,000 radio frequencies ahead of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, describing the measure as an operation of unprecedented scale for a sports event. The authorisations cover services essential to staging the Games, from broadcasting to communications and safety systems.

Italian operator Tiscali has launched a series of promotions covering its Casa-branded FTTH, FTTC and FWA offers, discounting monthly costs for new users. They start at EUR 19.90 a month for the first 12 months (EUR 25.90 thereafter) for Tiscali Casa Fibra Power and Casa Ultrainternet with pay-as-you-go calls and internet access at speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps on the network of wholesale partner Open Fiber.

WindTre revamps tourist pass portfolio

Italian operator WindTre has refreshed its range of passes for foreigners visiting the country ahead of the start of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. The plans start with 'Tourist Pass L' with 100GB data at 5G speeds, unlimited calls to national numbers plus 100 minutes to international numbers for EUR 15 for a month. Users acquiring two SIMs can sign up to 'Tourist Pass L Pack' with 200GB of data rather than 100GB.

Italian police shut down 'industrial-scale' illegal streaming operation

Global anti-piracy coalition the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE) has welcomed the success of Operation Switch Off, a coordinated law-enforcement operation led by the District Prosecutor's Office of Catania and Italy's Postal and Cybercrime Police that has taken down an "industrial-scale" illegal IPTV service. According to ACE, the coordinated enforcement action identified 31 suspects following 29 raids in 11 Italian cities and 14 countries worldwide, including Spain, Romania, the United King

Live sports streaming service Dazn Italia has launched a new promotion under the government's National Youth Card initiative, offering users aged between 18 and 35 access to the new Full Mobile plan for EUR 19.99 a month. The mobile-only rate comes with Dazn's full catalogue, including Serie A, Serie B and other sports, among them all events from the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games via Eurosport.

PosteMobile continues refunding Ukraine calls and texts

Italian MVNO PosteMobile said it will continue to reimburse its customers for all international calls and SMS from Italy to Ukraine up until at least 28 February 2026 due to the ongoing war in the Eastern European country. The operator previously reimbursed customers in the form of a top-up for all calls and SMS carried out until the end of 2025 and has pledged to do so for all January and February traffic by 10 March.
