Peruvian number ports rebound to 537K in March

A total of 536,832 Peruvian mobile users ported their phone number to another operator in March 2026, up over 13 percent compared to the previous month, according to the latest data from telecom regulator Osiptel. The figure compares with the 474,439 ported numbers in February and means more than 1.5 million users requested a line change in the first quarter of 2026, said the watchdog.

Millicom inks deal to join TAM-1 subsea cable project

Millicom, owner of Tigo-branded operations across Latin America, has signed a long-term commercial agreement with Trans Americas Fiber System (TAFS) to enhance its international network infrastructure in Central America. The deal will integrate Millicom into the TAM-1 subsea cable project, expanding the company's capacity and resilience to meet the region's growing demand for reliable digital connectivity.

Mexico's CFE installs free internet access points in over 6,000 schools and health centres

Mexico's state-owned operator CFE Telecomunicaciones e Internet para Todos (CFE-TEIT) said it has teamed up with the country's Social Security Institute (IMSS) and Ministry of Public Education (SEP) to install free internet access points (PAIG) in over 6,500 establishments. Specifically, in 2025 alone, CFE-TEIT set up some 3,180 access points in health clinics and 3,483 in tele-schools nationwide, benefiting thousands of rural communities.

Antel debuts premium TV service

Uruguayan state-owned operator Antel has announced the launch of a premium audiovisual content service that will be available at no additional cost to customers subscribed to home broadband and mobile plans costing UYU 1,650 a month and above. The offering, dubbed Antel TV Premium, includes the signals of pay-TV channels VTV, FIX TV and Canal 4, allowing customers to view Uruguayan basketball, carnival, news and entertainment shows as well as movies and regional programming.

Argentina's Enacom recovers USD 40 mln in telco debts

Argentina's telecommunications regulator Enacom said it has successfully recovered debts dating back 25 years amounting to ARS 55 billion (around USD 40 million) from the country's main ICT service providers. The new Payment Facilitation Plan covers debts incurred up to 31 December 2025 due to non-payment of control, inspection and verification fees, radioelectric rights, contributions to the universal service fund and fines, said the watchdog.

Claro Peru (America Movil) said its 5G network is now available in 110 districts across the country following activation at the end of last year. The service can be accessed by users with compatible devices in dozens of new cities and provinces, including Lima, Callao, Arequipa, Trujillo, Chiclayo, Cusco, Ica, Piura, Lambayeque, Puno, Huaraz, Sullana, Paita, Talara, Pisco and Abancay.

Peru to invest USD 93 mln in Arequipa digital divide project

Peru's transport and communications ministry (MTC) said it will invest USD 93 million in a major project to connect digital divide areas across the southern Arequipa region. The initiative will eventually bring high-speed internet access to more than 141,000 people in 252 localities as well as 268 educational institutions, 121 health centres and 53 police stations.

Personal Argentina's Pacheco data centre secures CEEDA certification

Personal Argentina confirmed that its Pacheco data centre on the outskirts of Buenos Aires obtained the international CEEDA (Certified Energy Efficient Data Centre Award) certification, validating the efficiency of its energy management and its sustainable operation under global standards. The Pacheco facility has 5,700m² of IT area, Tier III standards and an operation supplied by more than 98 percent renewable sources, said the Telecom Argentina-owned company.

Digital infrastructure company Cirion has announced the appointment of Carlos Oviedo Risi as new Country Manager & Sales Director for its Connectivity division in Chile. Indra lands EUR 40 mln Chile rail comms contract

Spanish ICT group Indra has secured a EUR 40 million contract from state-owned rail operator EFE Trenes de Chile to manage communications across the new Alameda-Melipilla and Santiago-Batuco railway lines. The two routes form part of one of Chile's largest recent transport projects, designed to link central Santiago with more than a dozen suburban areas in the metropolitan region.

Brazil calls for bids for 700 MHz lots

Anatel, the Brazilian telecommunications agency, has kicked off the bidding process for the use of radio frequencies in the 700 MHz sub-bands (708-718 MHz and 763-773 MHz). On 15 April, interested parties must submit their identification, tax compliance documents, price proposals, and guarantees. The price proposals will be opened, analyzed, and judged on 30 April.

5G available to 70% of Brazilian population

Brazil's Minister of Communications Frederico de Siqueira Filho announced that Brazil has significantly exceeded its 5G expansion goals, now providing access to over 60 million people, or roughly 70 percent of the population. In a speech at the Conexis conference, he said 5G is available in 1,780 municipalities, far surpassing initial targets, and there are more than 60 million 5G connections in the country.

Metodo wins bidding for Oi's fixed assets

Brazilian operator Oi announced that Metodo Telecom successfully bid BRL 60.1 million to acquire the fixed telephony assets of the operator going through financial restructuring. Sercomtel also submitted a proposal of BRL 60 million, but Metodo's all-cash offer met the sale's conditions. The acquisition is still subject to approval by the regulators Anatel and Cade.

Anatel, Brazil's telecommunications agency, has showcased practical AI applications, including demonstrations and case studies, aimed at enhancing spectrum management. The project, conducted in collaboration with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), seeks to forecast demand, optimise allocation, and improve spectrum monitoring to support technologies like 5G, 6G, and IoT.

TelevisaUnivision launches offer to buy back 2028 notes

TelevisaUnivision said it has launched a cash tender offer through its wholly owned unit Univision Communications to buy back a portion of its outstanding 8.0 percent senior secured notes due 2028, which total about USD 1.44 billion in principal. The tender offer, open to all registered holders, is scheduled to expire on 06 May unless terminated or extended earlier.

Oi creditors try to stop sale of V.tal shares - report

A group of Oi's creditors is trying to stop the sale of the company's remaining V.tal shares to BTG Pactual, reported Valor Economico. They have asked a New York bankruptcy court to enforce a previous agreement related to Oi's Brazilian reorganization plan. The creditors claim Oi is violating this agreement by trying to sell its V.tal stake, which is a major asset used as collateral, without following the rules. They argue that BTG Pactual's offer was too low and was rejected by most bondholders.

Movistar and Telecentro top Argentina fixed internet ranking

Movistar Argentina, in the process of being acquired by Telecom Argentina, ranked first in the latest fixed internet performance ranking published by nPerf, corresponding to the first quarter of 2026, alongside TeleCentro, with all operators showing "significant" improvements. The tests revealed that Movistar subscribers enjoyed an average download speed of 193.7 Mbps, ahead of Telecentro on 180.7 Mbps, followed by Personal (Telecom Argentina) on 140.5 Mbps and Claro (America Movil) on 132.5 Mbps.

Axtel upgrades network with Cisco routed optical technology

Mexican telecommunications operator Axtel has selected Cisco technology to upgrade its IP and optical networks, becoming the first company in the country to deploy the Cisco 400 Gb Routed Optical Networking (RON) architecture. Axtel said the move will enable it to better handle surging data traffic growth and meet the demand for more flexible, energy-efficient infrastructure.

Chile clears AWS data centre build

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been given the green light to proceed with the installation of a new data centre in Huechuraba (Santiago province) after the Second Environmental Court of Chile dismissed appeals against its environmental qualification. The court ruled that there are no elements preventing the establishment of a single project encompassing the storage centre and the abandoned Huechuraba high-voltage line, paving the way for the construction of the USD 205 million site.

Liberty Costa Rica slashes SMS spam with Enea firewall

Liberty Costa Rica has cut SMS spam by 99 percent within three weeks of deploying Enea's Adaptive Messaging Firewall, announced the partners in a joint statement. The operator, part of Liberty Latin America, reported a sharp drop in fraudulent messaging traffic, resulting in enhanced subscriber security and trust in its mobile network.

Brazilian telecom investment up 5% in 2025

Brazil's telecom sector made total investments worth BRL 36.3 billion in 2025, a 5.2 percent nominal increase (0.2% real increase) from 2024. This growth, reported by industry group Conexis Brasil Digital, was primarily driven by the expansion of 5G infrastructure and fibre-optic broadband networks.

Brazilian IoT solutions provider BWS IoT is expanding and has hired Rebeca Antunes as its new marketing manager. Antunes brings a strong background in marketing, branding, and demand generation, with previous experience at RedGPS, where she focused on market expansion in Brazil and Latin America. At BWS IoT, her main responsibilities will include enhancing brand positioning, generating demand, increasing institutional visibility, and supporting the company's growth into new markets.

Telefonica sells Movistar Mexico to Oxio-led consortium

Telefonica announced an agreement to sell its Movistar Mexico subsidiary to a consortium led by US provider Oxio and financial investor Newfoundland for a total of USD 450 million (around EUR 389 million). The new owners said Movistar Mexico will continue operating under the same name and leadership team, adding that the operator's 20 million customers can expect uninterrupted service as well as future improvements in service quality.
