European vendors step up advocacy to address internet router security risks

Four European internet router suppliers have joined forces to establish SAFENet, an alliance advocating for European self-reliance in their target market. Fritz!, Devolo, Lancom and TDT will collaborate to foster dialogue with European policymakers and users, aiming to highlight potential measures to make routers more secure and stamp out risks which it believes are linked to foreign manufacturers.

GSMA says mobile sector effect on GDP rises 14% in 2025

The effect of the mobile industry on the EU's GDP increased by 14 percent in 2025 to EUR 1.15 trillion, according to 'The Mobile Economy Europe 2026' report from the GSMA. The report finds that Europe's mobile sector now directly accounts for 6.1 percent, up from 5.5 percent or a EUR 1.01 trillion contribution in 2024. It said that EUR 820 billion came from productivity, as using mobile phones and mobile internet apps made obtaining information more efficient, and accelerated processes and communications.

ETSI has officially launched its first specification in support of the EU's digital identity wallet scheme, bringing to market an early technical foundation for supplying identity documents and personal attributes such as age. The specification release marks a major milestone for Europe's digital ID infrastructure, paving the way for interoperable and privacy-first wallets available to 450 million EU inhabitants.

South Korea's ministry of science and ICT and the European Union have agreed to expand cooperation in science, technology, AI and digital policy during South Korean president Lee Jae Myung's state visit to Belgium and the EU. Telefonica Germany rolls out SD-WAN infrastructure in Deichmann stores in Europe

Telefonica Germany said it is rolling out standardised SD-WAN infrastructure in approximately 4,700 branches of footwear retailer Deichmann in Europe. The company picked Telefonica to upgrade the infrastructures in its shoe stores and streamline retail operations. The SD-WAN infrastructure enables Deichmann to deploy digital applications at scale, and centralise management, providing the foundation for testing and launching new in-store services faster, as well as new technologies and digital applications.

EU publishes code of practice on labelling AI-generated content

The European Commission has published its final Code of Practice on marking and labelling of AI-generated content. While these guidelines are optional, AI developers in the EU have until 02 August to implement AI Act transparency rules, including a requirement for clear labelling in deepfake AI content or AI-generated media related to public-interest matters. Users must also be informed when they are interacting with an interactive AI system, such as a chatbot.

Nextcloud has announced a new office option, lighter user interface and new governance tool under an update called Nextcloud Hub 26 Spring. The release coincides with its tenth anniversary this month.
