Telefonica Tech wins Deoleo digital transformation deal

Telefonica's digital business unit Telefonica Tech has signed a global agreement with olive oil producer Deoleo to accelerate the group's digital transformation and improve efficiency across its international operations. Orange Spain debuts automated fibre system that cuts setup time by 80%

Orange Spain (MasOrange) has introduced what it describes as Europe's first system capable of remotely setting up and activating fibre-optic data transmission services using Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology. The new system, designed for large companies and public administrations, enables automatic detection and configuration of WDM equipment once connected to the network, significantly reducing the need for manual intervention.

Movistar Spain slashes price of '5G home' offer

Movistar Spain (Telefonica) has launched a new promotion to encourage users to sign up to its 'Hogar Conectado 5G' plan for customers who want home Wi-Fi without a fibre connection. The rate is now available for EUR 19.90 a month for the first 12 months, rising to EUR 30 a month (down from EUR 34) thereafter.

Telefonica acquires Spanish consultancy firm Altim for USD 30 mln

Telefonica has confirmed the acquisition of Altim, a Madrid-based consultancy Altim specialising in setting up SAP business management software, for around EUR 30 million. According to data seen by business daily El Economista, Altim posted revenues of EUR 14.3 million in 2024 and EUR 12.3 million in 2023. The deal is the first domestic acquisition since Marc Mutra took over as executive chairman a year ago and is above all designed to boost Telefonica Spain's B2B unit.

Commercial broadcaster Mediaset has reached a sublicensing agreement with rights holder Dazn to air several MotoGP and F1 races on its FTA channels in Spain. The deal includes the Spanish Grand Prix held on 12-14 June at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as well as the inaugural Madrid Grand Prix taking place in the Spanish capital on 11-13 September.

Orange Spain (MasOrange) has partnered with AI specialist One Million Bot to launch what the partners describe as the first multi-channel generative AI assistant in the global museum sector. The system has been created specifically for, and with, Casa Batllo, the Gaudi-designed Unesco World Heritage Site located on Barcelona's Passeig de Gracia, and follows strict standards of accessibility and scalability for AI integration in real-world settings.

Spain PM unveils 'Hodio' tool to track hate speech on social media

Spain's prime minister Pedro Sanchez has announced the launch of Hodio, a new digital measurement mechanism aimed at tracking hate speech and disinformation across social media platforms. The tool, launched around a month after Sanchez pledged to ban minors aged under 16 from social networks, will allow Spain's Observatory on Racism and Xenophobia to "systematically measure the presence, evolution and reach of hate speech" on digital platforms used in Spain, said Sanchez in comments reported by El Pais.

Revamped Disney Channel to return to Spain

The Walt Disney Company has announced that its pay-TV Disney Channel will relaunch in Spain on 01 April, around 15 months after its ceased broadcasting via the country's DTT service. The revamped kids-focused channel will replace Disney Junior, whose preschool content will still be aired via daily thematic blocks, while Disney Channel will broadcast programmes aimed at children aged 6 to 11.

Mediaset Spain, a subsidiary of MediaForEurope (MFE), has announced the appointment of Mario Rodríguez as its new chairman, replacing former minister for science and innovation Cristina Garmendia. A company veteran, Rodriguez has held numerous roles at Mediaset since joining the commercial broadcaster in 1998, including secretary of the board of directors for over 20 years and most recently director of corporate and institutional relations.

Telefonica has announced the details of a new movie-focused pop-up channel on its Movistar Plus+ IPTV platform. The channel, dubbed Los 2000 por M+, focuses on classic films and cult titles released in the 2000s, including Road to Perdition, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, Ali G Indahouse, The Hurt Locker and others.

After giving away a smart TV with its convergent rates earlier this year, MasOrange's Jazztel brand has now introduced a plan with fibre and two mobile lines for under EUR 45 a month. It includes fibre broadband at symmetric (download and upload) speeds of up to 600 Mbps, unlimited calls and two mobile lines with 60GB of data each for EUR 44.95 a month for good.

Spain and Portugal to explore joint bid for AI gigafactory

Spain and Portugal are are exploring the possibility of submitting a joint bid to host one of the European Union's planned AI gigafactories, the two governments said after a bilateral summit in La Rábida, southern Spain. The initiative follows the European Commission's announcement of a programme to set up at least 15 AI factories across Europe, five of which will receive backing from the InvestAI facility.

Spanish telecom infrastructure company Ezentis has unveiled an updated 2025-2028 strategic plan targeting revenues above EUR 160 million euros by 2028, nearly quadruple its pro forma 2025 revenue base of EUR 42.3 million. The new plan reinforces the group's growth ambitions after a period of restructuring aimed at consolidating its position in the installation and maintenance sector.

Orange Spain and Mainjobs awarded Madrid digital skills training deal

Orange Spain (MasOrange) said it has teamed up with the Community of Madrid and Grupo Mainjobs to train more than 10,000 residents in artificial intelligence and other digital technologies under a regional skills programme backed by EUR 7.9 million in public funding. The programme, focused mainly on unemployed people under 35, aims to boost employability and entrepreneurship by offering courses on AI, data science, 5G, cloud computing and digital business tools.

Vantage Towers, Telefonica launch Spain's first 5G SA mall network

Vantage Towers said it has teamed up with Telefonica to deploy a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) delivering 5G Standalone (SA) connectivity throughout the Plaza Norte 2 shopping centre in Madrid's northern suburbs. The installation makes the complex, located in San Sebastian de los Reyes, the first shopping mall in Spain to feature full indoor 5G SA coverage.

Spanish operator MasOrange marked International Women's Day by announcing that it has obtained the GEEIS (Gender Equality European & International Standard) certification, marking its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. The initiative, which is granted for four years following an independent assessment, evaluates how organisations develop, implement and monitor workplace policies fostering diversity and equal opportunities.

Movistar launches new multiSIM Watch offer

Movistar Spain (Telefonica) has decided to revamp its offer for smartwatch users and will launching a lower-cost plan for existing customers as well as free connectivity for those who sign up to a MiMovistar convergent contract with a bundled device, reports Bandaancha. The operator currently has 16 models of eSIM-compatible smartwatches in its catalogue at prices ranging from EUR 0 to EUR 13 a month in combination with a 48-month MiMovistar contract.

Vodafone Spain (Zegona) has decided to convert Finetwork into a low-cost brand to target fast-rising rival Digi Spain with the launch of a series of family-oriented plans, reports business daily Cinco Dias. MWC26 tops 105,000 attendees from 207 countries

The 2026 edition of Mobile World Congress (MWC26) in Barcelona attracted over 105,000 in-person visitors, just under last year's figure of 109,000 in spite of geopolitical tensions stemming from the US and Israeli strikes on Iran that prompted global travel disruptions. Marking two decades in the Catalan capital, GSMA chief executive John Hoffman said MWC26 welcomed attendees from a total 207 countries. "Twenty years in Barcelona and MWC continues to surprise and surpass expectations," he said.

Vodafone Spain, Telefonica complete sale of Fiberpass stake to Axa

UK-based telecom investment firm Zegona, owner of Vodafone Spain, announced that the acquisition by France's Axa Investment Management of a 40 percent stake in Fiberpass, the wholesale fibre operator it set up with Telefonica at the start of last year, has now completed. As a result, Telefonica will retain a majority stake of 55 percent of Fiberpass, with Axa owning 40 percent and Vodafone Spain seeing its share drop to 5 percent.

MasOrange opens Orange Smartstore in Murcia

MasOrange has announced the opening of a physical Orange Smartstore in Murcia following an investment of around EUR 200,000. The new own-brand space, located on Calle Gran Vía del Escultor Francisco Salzillo at the heart of the city, replaces the brand's previous location on the same street. It has a 20 percent larger space and renovated facilities to offer customers a more modern and complete shopping experience, said the operator.

Movistar Spain introduces scam call detection feature

Movistar Spain (Telefonica) has followed rivals including MasOrange by announcing the imminent implementation of a new service to protect customers from telephone spam and fraud. The free feature, dubbed 'Llamadas Molestas' ('Annoying Calls'), will be activated by default, providing an extra layer in the identification and notification of nuisance or fraudulent calls.
